R-2 VOLLEYBALL TEAM WINS THIRD MATCH OF THE SEASON

The Montgomery County R-2 Lady Wildcats Volleyball team earned its third win of the 2012 season, as they defeated Calvary Lutheran (Jefferson City) 2 games to 0 (25-15 and 25-23) last Thursday, October 11.  Earlier in the week they lost to Chamois 2 games to 1 (11-25, 25-19 and 18-25) on Monday, October 9.  Then on Tuesday, October 10, they lost to Winfield 2 games to 0 (25-8 and 25-16).  With these matches the Lady Wildcats’ record is now 3 wins and 17 losses.

In the first game of the Calvary match the Lady Wildcats led 6-5 after the first two service turns for each team.  R-2 then scored 5 points on Anna Ash’s serve turn to take an 11-6 lead.  3 points on Sierra Kolan’s service turn and 4 points on Tori Van Doren’s service turn gave the Lady Wildcats a 20-9 lead.  From that point on the teams basically exchanged service turns and the Lady Wildcats won 25-15.

In the second game the Lady Wildcats led 4-1 after each team’s first service turn.  Neither team scored more than 2 points on the rest their service turns in this game (13 turns for each team) and the game remained close throughout.  Calvary was able to get within 1 point twice late in the game (22-21 and 24-23), but the Lady Wildcats were able to hold on and win the game 25-23 and the match 2 games to 0.

Individual statistics for the Lady Wildcats were as follows:

Service Aces – Ash 2; and Justice Kobusch, Sophie Teeter, Van Doren and Kolan 1 each.

Kills/Spikes At The Net – Kolan 4; Van Doren 3; Victoria Weitkamp and Jessie Paddon 2 each; and Emily Johnson and Hope Fry 1 each.

Assists – Ash 10.

Blocks – Kolan 1 solo.

Digs – Kobusch and Van Doren 12 each; Caroline Shaw 6; Teeter 5; Ash 3; Marina Marihno and Kolan 2 each; and Paddon 1.

In the first game of the Chamois match on Monday, the Lady Wildcats never really got anything going on offense.  Chamois took an early 5-1 lead.  From that point the teams exchanged 0 or 1-point service turns through their fifth service turns to give Chamois a 9-7 lead.  Chamois scored 2 points on its sixth service turn to lead 11-8, and then had a 12-point service turn to take a 24-9 lead.  R-2 scored 2 points on its next service turn, but that was it and Chamois won the first game 25-11.

In the second game the Lady Wildcats had a 7-5 after three service turns.  Chamois scored 7 points on its next two service turns to take a 13-9 lead.  The Lady Wildcats responded with a 6-point service turn (Van Doren serving) to retake the lead at 15-14.  The Lady Wildcats allowed Chamois to score only 1 point on its last 5 service turns, while scoring at least 1 point on 4 of its last 5 service turns to win the game 25-19.

In the third game Chamois scored at least 1 point on its first 7 service turns to take a 16-8 lead.  The Lady Wildcats were able to close the score to 22-17, but that was as close as they would get.  Chamois won the game 25-18 and the match 2 games to 1.

Individual statistics for the Lady Wildcats were as follows:

Service Aces – Van Doren 3; Kolan 2; and Kobusch 1.

Kills/Spikes At The Net – Ash 6; Kolan 5; Fry and Johnson 3 each; Van Doren 2; and Weitkamp 1.

Digs – Van Doren 11; Kobusch 7; Ash 4; Shaw 3; Fry 2; and Teeter and Weitkamp 1 each.

In the first game of the Winfield match the teams were tied at 8-8 after their first four service turns each.  Then Winfield scored 17 unanswered points on its fifth service turn to win the game 25-8.

A 7-point service turn on Winfield’s second turn gave Winfield a 10-3 lead in the second game.  Later in the game, a 4-point service turn by Kobusch cut Winfield’s lead to 20-13.  However, that was the only offense the Lady Wildcats could muster and they lost to the game 25-16 and the match 2 games to 0.
