R-2 VOLLEYBALL LOSE FIRST 3 GAMES OF THE SEASON

The Montgomery County R-2 Lady Wildcats Volleyball team started its 2012 season with 3 matches over the past two weeks.  The season started on August 27 with a home match against Warrenton, which the Lady Wildcats lost 2 games to 0.  The scores were 26-28 and 11-25.  Last Tuesday, the Lady Wildcats traveled to Bowling Green and lost 2 games to 1 (18-25, 25-23 and 22-25).  On Thursday they lost to a strong New Haven team 2 games to 0 (7-25 and 8-25).

The first game of the Warrenton match was very exciting.   The Lady Wildcats took an early 2-1 lead only to fall behind 3-6.  Warrenton was able to maintain a 2-5 point lead through much of the game, before the Lady Wildcats started their comeback.

Scoring at least 2 points on four consecutive service turns, while holding Warrenton to only 1 point on their four service turns, the Lady Wildcats took a 22-21 lead.  However, R-2 could not capitalize on their momentum and Warrenton was able to outscore the Lady Wildcats 7-4 the rest of the way to win the game 28-26 (you must win by at least 2 points).

In the second game, Warrenton was able to score 8 points on its first service turn and 5 points on its third service turn to open a 16-6 lead and never looked back.  The final score was 25-11.

Individual statistics for the Lady Wildcats were as follows:

Service Aces – Hope Fry and Anna Ash 3 each; and Sierra Kolan 2.

Kills/Spikes At The Net – Kolan 3.

Blocks At The Net – Kolan 2; and Ash 1.

Digs – Ash 1.

Assists – Ash 2.

The Bowling Green match was very exciting.  The Lady Wildcats scored 4 points on Ash’s service turn (the teams 2nd service turn) and took a 5-3 lead.  However, BG came back with 7 points on the next service turn to take a 10-6 lead.  Despite a 4-point service turn by Mariana Marinho (Foreign Exchange student at R-2), the Lady Wildcats were never able to recover and lost the first game 25-19.

In the second game the Lady Wildcats fell behind 2-1, but then scored 6 points on their first service turn (Justice Kobusch serving) to take a 7-3 lead.  The team exchanged 1-2 points on the next four service turns, but then the Lady Wildcats scored 5 points while Marinho was serving to take a 19-12 lead.  BG made a comeback and was able to cut the score to 24-23, but the Lady Wildcats were able to stop BG on the next serve and won the game 25-23.

R-2 was able to take an 8-4 lead early in the third game, but BG came back to tie the score at 10-10.  Again, the teams exchanged a few points on their next 2 service turns, but then R-2 scored 4 points while Kobusch was serving to take a 17-14 lead.  Unfortunately, BG outscored the Lady Wildcats 11-5 the rest of the game (including a 5-point service turn) to win the game 25-22 and the match 2 games to 1.

Individual statistics for the Lady Wildcats were as follows:

Service Aces – Kobusch 5; Ash and Marinho 3 each; and Tori Van Doren 1.

Kills – Van Doren 5; Kolan and Emily O’Keefe 4 each; and Ash, Fry and Victoria Weitkamp 2 each.

Blocks – Kolan 2.

Digs – Van Doren 8; Sophie Teeter, Kobusch and Marinho 6 each; Ash 3; Fry 2; Kolan and O’Keefe 1 each.

Assists – Ash 14.

The Lady Wildcats were not able to do much of anything positive in the New Haven match.  They only scored 1 point on 6 service turns in the first game and lost 25-7.  In the second game they only scored 2 points on 6 service turns and lost 25-8.

Individual statistics for the Lady Wildcats were as follows:

Service Aces – Van Doren 1.

Kills – Van Doren 3; and Fry and Weitkamp 2 each.

Digs – Marinho, Van Doren and Ash 3 each; Kobusch 2; and Teeter 1.

Assists – Ash 6.

The Lady Wildcats have 2 regular matches this week, as they play at Union on Tuesday, September 11 (Jr. Varsity match starts at 5:30, followed by the Varsity match).  On Thursday, September 13, they host Bowling Green in what should be an exciting match (Jr. Varsity match starts at 6:00, followed by the Varsity match).  On Saturday, September 15, the Varsity team will play several matches in the Orchard Farm Tournament (north St. Charles County).  No information about the tournament was available when this report was written.

Next week the Lady Wildcats will travel to Columbia on Tuesday, September 18, to play at Father Tolton Catholic High School.  On Thursday, September 20, they will host Wright City.  Both matches will start with the Jr. Varsity match at 6:00 p.m.

The Lady Wildcats hope you will attend their upcoming matches and cheer them on to some victories in the 2012 season.
