R-2 WILDCAT GOLF TEAM FINISHES THIRD IN DISTRICT TOURNEY

LICHTENBERG AND LOTTON QUALIFY FOR STATE SECTIONALS

**SPECIAL NOTE** - In last week’s report about the East Missouri Conference Tournament, Shane Lotton’s name was inadvertently omitted as earning All-Conference honors along with Brady Lichtenberg and Adam Sullivan.  Shane finished in a 3-way tie for 10th Place with his score of 90.  As was mentioned in last week’s report, Brady and Adam finished in 3-way tie for 6th Place with a score of 88.  My apology to Shane for this omission.

DISTRICT TOURNAMENT

The Montgomery County R-2 Wildcats’ golf team finished in a tie with Centralia for 3rd Place (11 teams) in the Missouri District 3 Golf Tournament for Class 2 schools (based on high school enrollment numbers).  The tournament was played last Tuesday, April 24, at the Norwood Golf Course in Hannibal (6,444 yards long and Par 72).

Although the team did not qualify for the State Sectional Tournament, Brady Lichtenberg and Shane Lotton both qualified for the Sectionals for the second year in a row.  They did so by finishing with one of the Top 15 scores in the tournament (55 golfers).  Brady finished in a 3-way tie for second place by shooting an 85 (1 birdie and 5 pars).  Shane finished in a 3-way tie for eleventh place by shooting a 90 (7 pars).  Hunter Bagget (Palmyra) shot “medalitst” (lowest) score for the tournament with an 84.

Palmyra won the tournament and qualified for the Sectional Tournament with a team score of 351 (based on the 4 lowest scores out of 5 golfers).  North Callaway also qualified for the Sectional Tournament with a 2nd Place score of 362.  The rest of the teams in the tournament and their scores were as follows:  Macon (385), Hallsville (405), Highland (426), Monroe City (430), Clark County (435), Bowling Green (446) and Missouri Military Academy (451).

In addition to Lichtenberg and Lotton, Alex Arens had the third best score for R-2 with a 103 (1 par), and Adam Sullivan had the fourth best score with a 105 (2 pars).  Andrew Gaines was the other R-2 golfer and he finished with a 118 (1 birdie).

Next up for Lichtenberg and Lotton is the State Sectional Tournament, which will be played this Thursday, May 3, at the Eagle Noll Golf Course near Ashland (Hwy. 63 between Columbia and Jefferson City).  The starting time for this tournament is 9:00 a.m.  If Brady and Shane play well enough in this tournament, they will qualify for the State Finals Tournament, which will be played May 14-15 (36-hole tournament) in Springfield.

FINAL REGULAR SEASON MATCH

Last Monday, April 23, the Wildcats had their last regular season match of the season, as they hosted Silex and Community R-VI.  The Wildcats won the match as they had a team score of 170 (4 lowest scores out of 6 golfers).  Silex finished second with a team score of 190, and Community R-VI was third with a team score of 247.

Lichtenberg had the “medalist” score with a 38 (1 birdie, 5 pars).  He was followed by Lotton with a 41 (2 birdies, 1 par); Arens with a 44 (3 pars); and Sullivan with a 47 (1 par).  Jack Ecton and Allen Rodriguez also played for R-2.  Ecton had a 56 (1 par) and Rodiguez had a 62.

With this match and the District Tournament, the Wildcats finished the season with a record of 34 wins, 9 losses, and 1 tie (based on how they did against all of the teams they faced in all of the regular matches and tournaments they played in).  This was a definite improvement over last year’s record of 27 wins and 23 losses.

“Congratulations” to the Wildcats on a great season.  Also, “Best Wishes” to Brady and Shane at the Sectional Tournament on Thursday.
