R-2 WILDCATS LOSE TO ELSBERRY

The Montgomery County R-2 Wildcats basketball team played against Elsberry (one of the best teams in northeast Missouri with a record of 20 wins and 2 losses) last Tuesday and was soundly defeated by the Indians by the score of 83-47.  With this game the Wildcats’ overall record is11 wins and 12 losses, and their East Missouri (EMO) Conference record is 4 wins and 5 losses.  The Jr. Varsity team won its game against Elsberry and improved its record to 16 wins and only 1 loss.

Elsberry took control of the game from the very beginning as the Indians outscored R-2 31-13 in the first quarter.  The second quarter was much closer, but Elsberry still outscored R-2 19-14 to lead 50-27 at halftime.  Elsberry had another big quarter in the third quarter, outscoring R-2 24-11 to lead 74-38 by the end of the quarter.  Both teams scored 9 points each in the final quarter to make the final score 83-47.

Jerad Jordan led the Wildcats in scoring with 10 points (2 field goals/FGs, 2 3-pointers).  He was followed in the scoring by Ryan Knipfel and Cameron Parrish with 8 points each (Knipfel 3 FGs/2 FTs and Parrish 4 FGs), Nick Oden, Tim Kroll and Jacob Davis with 5 points each (Oden and Kroll each had 2 FGs/1 FT and Davis had 1 FG/3 FTs), Taylor Deves with 4 points (1 FG/2 FTs), and Andrew Gaines with 2 points (1 FG).

In other key stats Gaines led the Wildcats with 3 rebounds.  Deves led R-2 in assists with 5.

The Wildcats “regular” season comes to an end this week with 2 “road” games.  On Tuesday, February 21, the Wildcats play at Hermann (non-conference game).  The JV game will start at 6:00 p.m., followed by the Varsity game.  On Friday, February 24, the Wildcats will play at Orchard Farm (St. Charles County) in an EMO Conference game.  The JV game will start at 5:30 (instead of 6:00 p.m.), followed by the Varsity game.

Next week the Wildcats will play in the State District 8 Tournament for Class 3 schools (based on high school enrollment numbers), at Christian High School in O’Fallon.  The Wildcats are seeded 6th in the tournament (9 teams) and will play their first game on Tuesday, February 28, at 4:00 p.m. against North Callaway (3rd seed).  As is always the case in the state playoffs, the Wildcats must win in order to play another game.  Should they defeat North Callaway, the Wildcats will play on Thursday, March 1, against the winner of the Winfield vs. Missouri Military Academy game.  The District Championship Game is on Saturday, March 3, at 6:30 p.m.  The winner of the district tournament will advance to the state playoffs the following week.

The Wildcat players and coaches appreciate the great support they have received this season and hope you will continue that support in these last 2 games of the season and as they play in the State District Tournament.  Go Wildcats!
