LADY WILDCATS WIN 2 AND LOSE 1
The Montgomery County R-2 Lady Wildcats basketball team played three games since the last report (January 25th issue of the Standard), winning two of those games and losing one. On January 30, Monday, the Lady Wildcats played well but lost to Hermann (who is still undefeated this season) 60-43. On February 2, Thursday, they traveled to Winfield and won 28-18. On February 6, Monday, they hosted Wright City and won 34-29.
The Hermann game was a non-conference game and the other two games were East Missouri (EMO) Conference games. With these games the Lady Wildcats have an overall record of 10 wins and 11 losses. Their EMO Conference record is 6 wins and 1 loss, which places R-2 in second place (behind Bowling Green) in the EMO Conference “Large School” Division (6 teams). The Lady Wildcats played Bowling Green this past Monday, February 13, and with a win they would tie the BG for the Conference Large School Division Championship.
The Lady Wildcats had a strong game against undefeated Hermann for all of the first half and most of the second half. Hermann led by only 1 point, 13-12, at the end of the first quarter. From that point Hermann was able to build a lead but only at a “gradual” pace, unlike the past few seasons when Hermann has been able to put R-2 away very early in the game.
Hermann outscored R-2 20-15 in the second quarter to lead 33-27 at halftime. In the third quarter Hermann outscored R-2 14-7 to extend its lead to 47-34 and then finished the game with a 13-9 fourth quarter to make the final score 60-43.
Brandy Reagan led R-2 in scoring with 16 points (6 field goals/FGs and 4 free throws/FTs). She was followed in the scoring by Rachel Miller with 7 points (2 FGs/1 3-pointer), Amy Muchow with 5 points (1 FG/1 3-pointer), Courtney Thomas, Mackenzie Yager and Danielle Schmidt with 4 points each (Thomas 1 FG/2 FTs and Yager and Schmidt 2 FGs each), and Hope Eoff had 3 points (1 3-pointer).
In other key stats Reagan led the team in rebounds with 16. Miller led the team in assists with 9.
The long trip to Winfield on February 2 seemed to have its usual “negative affect” on the Lady Wildcats as they got off to a slow start and trailed 12-7 at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Wildcats offense never really got on track, but their solid defense held Winfield to a total of only 6 points the rest of the game.
R-2 outscored Winfield 7-1 in the second quarter to lead 14-13 at halftime. The Lady Wildcats then outscored Winfield 6-3 in the third quarter to lead 20-16 and then outscored Winfield 8-2 in the fourth quarter to win the game 28-18.
Thomas led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 7 points (3 FGs/1 FT). She was followed in the scoring by Muchow and Yager with 6 points each (Muchow 1 FG/1 3-pointer/1 FT and Yager 3 FGs), Miller with 5 points (all FTs) and Reagan and Schmidt with 2 points each (Reagan 1 FG and Schmidt 2 FTs). Eoff also played in the game, but did not score.
In other key stats Reagan led the team in rebounds with 12. Miller led the team in assists with 4 and Eoff had 3.
On February 6 the Lady Wildcats earned their third victory over Wright City this season, but it took a strong second half performance for the Lady Wildcats to come away with this win. Wright City was able to outscore R-2 10-6 in the first quarter and 8-4 in the second quarter to build an 18-10 lead at halftime.
However, the Lady Wildcats came out strong in the second half and outscored WC 11-2 in the third quarter to take a 21-20 lead at the end of the quarter. The fourth quarter was close, but the Lady Wildcats outscored WC 13-9 and won the game 34-29.
Reagan led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 12 points (5 FGs/2 FTs). She was followed in the scoring by Miller with 9 points (3 FGs/3 FTs), Thomas with 6 points (3 FGs), Muchow with 5 points (1 FG/1 3-pointer) and Yager with 2 points (2 FTs). Schmidt and Eoff also played in the game but did not score.
In other key stats Reagan led the team in rebounds with 9 and Thomas had 8. Thomas led the team in steals with 5 and Miller had 4. Miller led the team in assists with 6 and Eoff had 3.
The Lady Wildcats have 4 games left in their “regular” season, before the State District Tournament starts on February 27. As was mentioned at the beginning of this report they played Bowling Green at home on Monday, February 13. The rest of the Lady Wildcats games are on the road, as they play at Elsberry (EMO game) this Thursday, February 16; at Silex (non-conference game) on Thursday, February 23; and at Orchard Farm (EMO game) on Friday, February 24.
For the Elsberry and Silex games the Jr. Varsity game will start at 6:00 p.m., followed by the Varsity game. For the Orchard Farm game the JV game will start at 5:30, followed by the Varsity game.
The Lady Wildcats and their coaches encourage you to attend their games and cheer them on to victory. Go Lady Wildcats!
