LADY WILDCATS PLAY IN S. CALLAWAY TOURNEY

The Montgomery County R-2 Lady Wildcats basketball team played 3 games in the South Callaway Tournament last week and lost 2.  On Monday, January 9, they played Harrisburg (the #1 seed in the tournament) and lost 70-28.  On Wednesday, January 11, they played North Callaway in the Consolation semifinals and lost 50-33.  On Friday, January 13, they defeated the host team, South Callaway, 32-26.  With these games the Lady Wildcats have an overall record of 5 wins and 8 losses.

In the first game of the tournament the Harrisburg girls showed why they were the #1 seed, as they scored at least 12 points each quarter while holding the Lady Wildcats to 9 points or less each quarter.  Harrisburg started the game by outscoring R-2 18-9 in the first quarter and 23-8 in the second quarter to lead 41-17 at halftime.  The second half was basically the same as Harrisburg outscored R-2 17-6 in the third quarter to lead 58-23, and then outscored the Lady Wildcats 12-5 in the fourth quarter to win the game 70-28.

Brandy Reagan led R-2 in scoring with 8 points (2 field goals/FGs and 4 free throws/FTs).  She was followed in the scoring by Amy Muchow with 6 points (1 FG/4 FTs), Mackenzie Yager with 5 points (1 FG/1 3-pointer), Courtney Thomas with 4 points (2 FGs), Rachel Miller with 3 points (1 FG/1 FT), and Hope Eoff with 2 points (1 FG).  Danielle Schmidt also played in the game, but did not score.

In other key stats Reagan led the team in rebounds with 8.  Miller led the team in assists with 3 and Muchow and Yager led the team in steals with 3 each.

Neither team got much going in the first quarter of the North Callaway game, as R-2 only scored 4 points but held NC to 2 points.  However, NC got its offense going in the second quarter, outscoring R-2 22-6 to lead 24-10 at halftime.  The teams played fairly even in the second half, as NC outscored R-2 13-10 in the third quarter to lead 37-20.  Then both teams scored 13 points in the fourth quarter to give NC a 50-33 victory.

Reagan led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 18 points (8 FGs/2 FTs).  She was followed in the scoring by Muchow with 7 points (2 FGs/1 3-pointer), Eoff with 4 points (2 FGs), and Yager and Schmidt with 2 points each (1 FG each).  Miller and Thomas also played in the game, but did not score.

Reagan led the team in rebounds with 10.  Miller led the team in assists with 8 and also in steals with 3.

Other than the final score of the South Callaway game, the stat/score book information was not available at the time this report was written.  A report on this game should be in next week’s issue of the Standard.

The Lady Wildcats have 2 home games this week.  They hosted Winfield on Monday, January 16, in an East Missouri (EMO) Conference game.  On Thursday, January 19, the Varsity Girls will participate in a “triple-header” against Wellsville-Middletown with the Jr. Varsity Boys’ and Varsity Boys’ teams.  The Varsity Girls’ game will follow the JV Boys’ game, which starts at 5:00, and the Varsity Boys’ game will follow the girls’ game.

Next week the Lady Wildcats, as well as the Wildcats Boys’ team, will play in the Hermann Tournament.  The girls play their first game against Owensville on Monday, January 23, at 7:30, at the Middle School Gym.  On Wednesday, January 25, they will play at 7:30 against either Chamois or Warrenton.  If they win on Monday, they will play at the High School Gym.  If they lose on Monday, they will play at the Middle School Gym.  They will play a third game in the tournament either on Friday night or Saturday at 1:00 at the High School Gym.  Again, when the Lady Wildcats play will be determined by the results of Monday and Wednesday’s games.
