LADY WILDCATS START 2012 WITH WIN AND LOSS
The Montgomery County R-2 Lady Wildcats basketball team started 2012 with a win and a loss last week. On Tuesday, January 3, they hosted and defeated Orchard Farm 60-34 in an East Missouri (EMO) Conference game. On Thursday, January 5, they traveled to Mokane and lost to South Callaway 35-22 in a non-conference game. With these games the Lady Wildcats have an overall record of 4 wins and 6 losses and a 3-1 EMO Conference record.
In the Orchard Farm game the Lady Wildcats took the early lead, as they outscored OF 16-5 in the first quarter, and they never looked back. They then outscored OF 19-11 in the second quarter to lead 35-16 at halftime. OF was able to outscore R-2 10-7 in the third quarter to cut the gap to 42-26, but R-2 outscored OF 18-8 in the fourth quarter to win the game 60-34
Brandy Reagan led R-2 in scoring with 29 points (9 field goals/FGs and 11 free throws/FTs). She was followed by Courtney Thomas with 10 points (4 FGs/2 FTs), Rachel Miller with 8 points (2 FGs/4 FTs), Amy Muchow with 5 points (2 FTs/1 FT), Mackenzie Yager with 4 points (2 FGs), and Makayla Yager and Danielle Schmidt with 2 points each (1 FG each).
In other key stats Reagan led the team in rebounds with 10, and Thomas had 6. Miller led the team in assists with 8 and steals with 2.
The Lady Wildcats were not as fortunate the South Callaway game, as SC was able to jump out to a 10-2 lead in the first quarter and led the whole ballgame. SC outscored R-2 10-7 in the second quarter to lead 20-9 at halftime. The Lady Wildcats were able to get back in the game somewhat in the third quarter, outscoring SC 8-4 to make the score 24-17. However, SC outscored R-2 11-5 in the final quarter to come away with a 35-22 win.
Reagan led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 7 points (3 FGs/1 FT). She was followed by Thomas with 6 points (3 FGs), Muchow with 3 points (1 FG/1 FT), and Miller, Mackenzie Yager and Hope Eoff with 2 points each (Miller and Yager with 1 FG each and Eoff with 1 FT). Makayla Yager did not play due to a stress fracture in her left foot and will be unable to play until at least early February.
Reagan led the team in rebounds with 10, followed by Thomas with 5. Miller led the team in assists with 5, and Thomas led the team in steals with 3.
This week the Lady Wildcats will be playing in the South Callaway Tournament. On Monday, January 9, they played Harrisburg. They play again on Wednesday, January 11, at 6:00 p.m., against either North Callaway or New Haven. Whether they play in the Middle School gym or the High School gym will be determined by the results of Monday’s game. They will also play a third game on Friday or Saturday, January 13 or 14, at the High School gym, but they won’t know which night they play until after Wednesday’s game.
The Lady Wildcats will have 2 home games next week. They will host Winfield on Monday, January 16, in EMO Conference game. The Jr. Varsity game will start at 6:00 and will be followed by the Varsity game. On Thursday, January 19, the Varsity Girls will participate in a “triple-header” against Wellsville-Middletown with the Jr. Varsity Boys’ and Varsity Boys’ teams. The Varsity Girls’ game will follow the JV Boys’ game, which starts at 5:00, and the Varsity Boys’ game will follow the girls’ game.
