Home » Football NewsMcGill Rolls to Sixth WinMarch 20, 2012 McGill-Toolen Catholic HSMcGill Rolls to Sixth Win by Rife Jones During their first game within the confines of Ladd Peebles Stadium in nearly two years, the seventh ranked Yellow Jackets maintained its undefeated season with a 52-20 victory over the Williamson Lions. The Jackets got off to a precarious start, going down 14-10 after a Williamson touchdown on a punt return. This unenergetic start was foreseeable for McGill after coming off a big victory over the then top ten ranked Davidson Warriors the previous week. However, Trey Roberts dug the Jackets out of their funk, rushing for 174 yards and three touchdowns on the night. The lead for McGill was 31-20 when the most exciting play of the game occurred, a 94 yard kickoff return by cornerback Philbert Martial with 4:24 remaining in the third quarter. Herlandez Corley’s interception and 40 yard return in the fourth quarter set up one of Roberts’ three touchdown runs, sealing the sixth win of the season for the Yellow Jackets. Along with Roberts and Martial, the Jackets were led by quarterback Jason Smith who had two touchdown passes to Chris Knowles in the first half. Also getting in on the scoring was senior running back Dustin Tipp who scored on a 28-yard scamper. When asked about the 6-0 start and top 10 ranking in the state, senior linebacker Alex Pond replied, “It is a great accomplishment for the senior class, especially after being doubted early in the season. It shows the dedication and determination of the team and also acts as a unifying force for the student body.” The team is in action this week for Homecoming against the Satsuma Gators.
