McCutcheon draws Jeff, Harrison receives bye in 4A volleyball sectional

Defending volleyball sectional champions McCutcheon and West Lafayette will have to take the long route to repeat.
The Mavericks learned they’ll open Class 4A, Sectional 7 play at home against Lafayette Jeff and the Red Devils play Class 3A, Sectional 20 host Maconaquah in the quarterfinals. The Indiana High School Athletic Association conducted its volleyball sectional draw Monday morning.
Sectional tournaments begin around the state on Oct. 16.
Harrison and Marion received byes in the McCutcheon Sectional and play each other in the semifinals. The winner of Logansport and Kokomo will play the Lafayette Jeff/McCutcheon winner in the other semifinal. McCutcheon defeated Lafayette Jeff in five games on Aug. 30.
At Maconaquah, Peru and Twin Lakes open the tournament with Western awaiting the winner. The West Lafayette/Maconaquah winner plays the winner of Northwestern and Benton Central in the other semifinal.
Frontier was among the final four teams remaining in Class A last season before losing to state champion Wes-Del in the Caston Semistate. The 10th-ranked Falcons received a bye in the Class A, Sectional 54 tournament at Clinton Prairie and play Tri-Central in the semifinals.
Faith Christian, playing in its first IHSAA postseason tournament, opens against sectional host Clinton Prairie. The winner will play the Rossville/Central Catholic winner. The Hornets defeated CC in last year’s sectional opener, ending the 2010 Class A state champions’ six-year sectional reign.
Other area teams will compete in sectional tournaments at Western Boone, Clinton Central, Pioneer and Covington. Delphi is the defending Class 2A, Sectional 38 champion. The Oracles will try to repeat in this year’s tournament at Clinton Central as they open with Sheridan. Carroll and Clinton Central also play in the first round and Fountain Central plays Seeger in the semifinals.
