Multiple scoring options extend McCutcheon's reign

LOGANSPORT -- Lakan Hasser-Smith fully expected Logansport to face guard in Saturday night's sectional championship.

The Mavericks senior point guard was fine, knowing the array of weapons at her disposal.

With McCutcheon's leading scorer taking just four field goal attempts, the Mavericks got boosts from their second- and third-leading scorers. Amanda Neill scored 20 points and Ashlynn Sexton added 18, leading the Mavericks to a third sectional title in a row, 62-50 at the Berry Bowl.

"Lakan is a standout player, so we knew that was probably going to happen," said Neill, who also led the Mavericks to a sectional championship over Logansport in volleyball in the fall. "We've been preparing for that all week, and I think we did a pretty good job."

McCutcheon (20-3) advances to next Saturday's Class 4A Kokomo Regional to play North Central (19-5).

Hasser-Smith finished 3 of 4 from the field, scoring 10 points. She also had five assists and watched as Jessica Hollinger, Chasity Horn and Lizzy Frazee kept the Berries off the glass.

Hollinger had a game-high 11 rebounds and scored six points. Horn finished with seven points and eight rebounds.

"They were monsters down there tonight," said Neill, who had seven rebounds. "They got every ball that came to them and that makes it that much easier for the outside shooters."

Logansport trailed by 12 at halftime, but got within 40-38 late in the third quarter thanks to a push from sophomore Whitney Jennings. Jennings scored 11 points in the period, but Sexton and Neill helped push the gap back to seven going into the fourth.

"Every team has their little spurt where they are going to score points like that," Sexton said. "We just had to take it and go right back at them."

Sexton hit a pair of free throws and Neill knocked down a 3-pointer from the wing to beat the third quarter buzzer and put the Mavericks ahead 45-38.

McCutcheon hit buzzer beaters at the end of the first three quarters, accounting for seven points, which was the difference at that point.

"The key is execution. Every game we have to be able to execute," McCutcheon coach Jeff Knoy said. "The last two times we've seen Logansport play, Whitney has hit those shots. They basically beat Kokomo with that exact same thing."

Jennings finished with 17 points for Logansport (20-4) on 22 shots before fouling out in the final minute.

"You can't contain her all the time," Knoy said. "She is going to get her points. Took a lot of shots to do that. She's a pretty good player, but we've got six pretty good seniors."

After Jennings' basket closed the gap to two points with 1:29 to go in the third, Logansport was held without a field goal until 3:23 left in the fourth.

McCutcheon's third sectional title in a row is the program's 14th overall.

"It's hard to win a sectional once, let alone three," Knoy said. "I went through my whole high school career and never won one. Most of our kids don't even know what it's like to lose in a sectional."
