DES MOINES - The Marshalltown Community College women's basketball team came out as the aggressor in the second half, jumping out to a 23-point lead that separated the Tigers from the Grand View junior varsity in a 76-63 victory on Tuesday night.
The MCC women (3-2) led by only one, 33-32, at the half but outscored the host Vikings 43-31 the rest of the way.
Marshalltown held a 23-point lead with 7 minutes remaining, and Grand View used full-court press defenses to try in vain to get back into the game.
"We played a much better second half," said MCC head coach Larry Roberts, "and hopefully we learned something tonight. We were much more active and boastful in the second half."
Jasmine Johnson led the Tigers with 14 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four blocked shots. Arnisha Thomas also had 14 points while Arielle Lockett added 13 points and five steals.
Shantal Tobler led with six steals, Courtney Sullivan had six assists and four steals, and Latrice McMullen had five blocks as Marshalltown ended its season-opening five-game road swing.
The Tigers play their home opener on Monday night, hosting the William Penn junior varsity at 6 p.m. at the Student Activity Center.
