IOWA FALLS - Marshalltown Community College's bid to catch Ellsworth in the final Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Division II softball standings came up one game short.
The host Panthers managed to win the second game of Thursday's doubleheader to maintain their two-game edge on MCC after the regular season finale.
Marshalltown slugged four home runs in an 18-10 victory in game one, but Ellsworth kept its offense going for an 11-3 triumph in the nightcap.
Cayla Collins connected for two of MCC's four home runs in the opener, running her season total to 14 round-trippers.
Megan Bolten went 3-for-4 with a home run and Krista Morris was 2-for-4 with a homer for the Tigers (16-28, 8-16). Dena Martin finished 4-for-5 with two triples, two stolen bases and two RBIs, while Kayla Blocker was 3-for-4. Ellie Ladd went 2-for-2 and Sami Stogdill was 2-for-5 with four RBIs.
Taylor Daubenberger was the recipient of all the offensive support, getting the win from the circle for the Tigers.
Stef Brown took the loss in game two as Ellsworth (24-25, 10-14) avoided the season split. The Panthers won both games over MCC in Marshalltown.
Martin again led the Tiger bats with a 3-for-3 day in game two. Stogdill was 2-for-3 with a stolen base, while both Morris and Collins had a hit and two RBIs.
Marshalltown is slated to play in the Iowa Central Crossover Tournament on Saturday and Sunday in Fort Dodge.
