May 11, 2014By Mike Thornburg of Monroe Central Jr.- Sr. High School
The Monroe Central Girls Varsity Track team competed well last night in the Randolph County Track Championship by finishing second to Randolph Southern by only 9 points. The Bears had six champions.
Monroe Central Champions:
-Senior Makenzie Norris completed her County career in fine fashion by wining the 1600 in a unchallenged 5:37.3 and then turned around and won the 3200 in 13:21.
-In one of the finest displays of track athleticism ever seen by a Monroe Central girl, Katarina Dibiasio won four County championships! Katarina won the 100, 200, Long Jump and the 400. None of those events were even close and her 400 time of 1:01.34 set a new school and Randolph County record. Her time beat Monroe Central's Dorinda Armstrong's 1986 county record of 1:01.70.
Other notable performances:
- the 4 X 100 Relay team of Cierra Burford, Hannah Deffendall, Paige Main and Sam Kelly placed third with a fine time of 59.29.
-Sophomore Hannah Deffendall placed second in the 300 Hurdles with a career best 52.08.
-Sophomore Holly Silvers placed 4th in the 800 and fifth in the 1600.
-Junior Megan Yates placed second in the High Jump with a leap of 5' 01."
-Junior Destiny Duncan placed third in the Discus and Shot.
