Monroe to play Union for boys title

By Josh Chapin Richmond Palladium-Item WINCHESTER — When Jacob Combs stepped to the freethrow line with 52 seconds remaining Saturday afternoon, the Monroe Central fanbase rose and gave the Golden Bears a rousing ovation.

Premature? Not on this day. And not with the way Combs and his teammates had played.

Monroe Central knocked the host team out of the Randolph County boys basketball tournament with a 57-40 victory at Winchester Fieldhouse that saw the Golden Bears erase a double-digit deficit in the second half.

Combs scored all 19 of his points in the second half, and Monroe Central missed just one shot from the field during a critical third-quarter stretch that saw it go from being 10 points down to leading Winchester by four.

The Golden Bears will play defending champion Union at 8 p.m. Monday in the final at the fieldhouse. The Rockets advanced by stopping Union City 56-38 in Saturday’s first semifinal.

“We have five or six seniors on the team, and I let them know that this was it. There is no tomorrow,” Monroe Central coach Tom Byrum said. “(I told them), ‘If you guys want to cut down the nets, and get the horseshoe back, it’s right now.’ ” The Golden Bears went into halftime down 21-13.

The Falcons quickly stretched that lead to 10 with a basket from Kiante Enis to start the third quarter.

What followed was almost all Golden Bears.

Monroe Central went on a 10-0 run to tie the score 23-23. The Golden Bears finished the quarter 8-of-9 from the field.

The momentum never shifted. Combs made 8-of-8
free throws in the fourth quarter, and the Golden Bears clinched their spot in Monday’s final.

Chase Bly had18 points for Monroe Central (6-3), while Barga finished with nine points and nine rebounds.

Enis led Winchester with 14 points and eight rebounds, with Alan Brutchen adding10 points and seven rebounds.
