WINCHESTER — Winchester boys basketball and Union girls basketball beat Randolph County rivals Friday night in the twice-delayed county tournament.
Staged this year at the Winchester Fieldhouse, the Golden Falcon boys started the night by taking control early to beat winless Randolph Southern 71-31, but the later girls game was much different.
The surging Rockets survived a late comeback by Monroe Central to beat the Golden Bears 52-47 in overtime.
In the nightcap, Union moved to 10-2 on the season, but it didn’t come easily.
The Rockets had an18-point run in the first half, blew out to a 28-9 lead, but the game seemed to turn late in the second quarter.
Monroe Central (6-7) scored six of the last eight first half points to close the deficit to 30-15 at intermission, then outscored Union14-4 in the third quarter to close the margin to 34-29.
“We made some adjustments at halftime,” Monroe Central coach Jeff Tharp said. “We went to man defense and got out of our zone. The kids responded well on defense and settled down on offense. Things started to click.”
A layup by the Golden Bears’ Mikaela McGrath wth one second left in the fourth quarter forced overtime.
But Union sophomore Rylee Davis took over in the overtime, scoring nine of her team’s10 points to finish with 17 points. She added 16 rebounds.
‘We played well in the first half, but lost it a little bit at the end of the half,” Union coach Tom Zell said. “We tried to play too fast late in the game, made some turnovers, but with (DeAnn) Kauffman out, she took over for us and did a great job. She has been our best rebounder all season.”
Kauffman had 16 points before fouling out, while Lisa Rodriguez added 11. For MC, Lexus Hosier had 17 points and McGrath scored 14.
