Monroe Central used tight first-quarter defense to pull away to a 46-29 victory against Union City in a Randolph County girls basketball tournament semifinal game at Union game.
The Golden Bears (4-9) held the Indians (5-8) to two points in the opening period in building a 13-point lead. They later pushed their lead to 20 points in the second half.
“We got off to a solid start defensively,” Monroe Central coach Jeff Tharp said. “Union City was a bit tight and we had an opportunity to get off to a good start and put them in a hole. And then we built on that.”
Emmarae Roberts and Mikaela McGrath led the Golden Bears in scoring, each netting 11 points. Roberts made her team’s only 3-pointer of the game.
Tharp said Winchester’s size would be a challenge for his team in the tournament championship game on Saturday.
“We want to be playing on championship night, we have an opportunity to do that, getting ready for the sectional,” Tharp said. “We’ve got a strong second half of the season in front of us and we’re just trying to build from where we are right now.”
