Monroe Central pulled away in the third quarter for a 17-point win in the opening round of the Randolph County boys tournament at Union.
Monroe Central generated 23 Union City turnovers and turned the ball over 11 times. The Golden Bears (3-4) led the Indians (0-9) by seven points at halftime, but pulled away to a 17-point lead by the end of the third quarter.
“We started a little lethargic in the first half and really picked it up a notch in the third quarter,” Monroe Central coach Luke Zartman said. “Our defensive intensity increased and we were able to get some steals that led to some easy buckets.”
Chase Bly led Monroe Central with 16 points. Troy Starr scored 12 points and Jake Combs scored 11 points for the Golden Bears.
Tre Burton scored 15 points to lead Union City.
“I thought we were just giving them second-chance opportunities, giving them multiple chances on possessions,” Union City coach Dustin Baldwin said. “Turnovers led to easy baskets for them.”
Monroe Central will play Winchester (3-4) in a semifinal Friday at Union. Randolph Southern (2-6) and Union (8-1) meet in the other semifinal.
