 MASSBAY SWEEPS 2009 MCCAC TOURNAMENT

Buccaneers celebrates historic win by preparing for regionals

Holyoke, Mass. – It took overtime to do it but the (23-5) MassBay Buccaneers outlasted the (21-9) Rams of Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) 71-64 in the 41st Annual Massachusetts Community College Athletic Conference (MCCAC) Championship Game. The last time these two teams met in a game with anything at stake was the 2008 NJCAA Region XXI Championship game.  Springfield won that game by one, at the buzzer.

Playing near even most of the first half, MassBay was the first to establish separation, going up by as much as thirteen.  All-American, Deshawn Gibbons (Boston, Mass.) paced MassBay as he scored 12 of his game high 20, points in the first half.  The Ram’s James Brown’s interior work on offense and defensive prowess kept the game close.  The teams entered the first half in a 31-31 stalemate.

The hot hands of Tyrell Mosley (Boston, Mass.) and Mike Young (Boston, Mass.) set the tone for MassBay in the second half, connecting on two three pointers each from downtown. STCC’s Edgar Martinez scored eight of his team high 14 in the second half. A series of stops and missed opportunities left the score tied at the end of regulation, forcing overtime.

Freshman guard Jakeen Cobb (Boston, Mass.) scored five points in overtime to secure the game for the Buccaneers. MassBay was led by Gibbons double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds. Mosley, Young and Jamal Swanson (Cambridge, Mass.) each contributed 12 points. Cobb shipped in 10 points in a winning effort.

Prior to winning the State Championship, MassBay prevailed against Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) 66-43 in the semi-final round of the tournament.  They were led by Mosely who collected a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds. Young contributed 14 points. Swanson chipped in 13 points.

MassBay will play next on Saturday, February 28 @ 4:00pm in the first round of the 2009 NJCAA Region XXI Tournament.  The 2009 NJCAA Region XXI Tournament will be held at Quinsigamond Community College.
