Freshman Volleyball Claim I-8 Conference Tournament Title

Freshman volleyball claimed the I-8 Conference tournament title on Saturday. They defeated Dwight 25-23; 25-21 to move to the winner’s bracket. There the Panthers faced Herscher and came away victorious 25-13; 25-12 to advance to the championship game. This was a true championship matchup between the #1 seeded Manteno and the #2 seeded Coal City. After a demanding 3 games, the Panthers came away with the trophy defeating the Coalers 25-22; 21-25; 15-12. The girls had a fabulous tournament and ended their season with an outstanding overall record of 22-1.
Selena Schulteis led the defense with a total of 36 digs for the tournament. Several other members of the team also contributed to the success of the defense. Sarah Marshall added 24 digs, Haylie Riner 17, Madison Langlois 8, and Leegan Boudreau 5. Emily Schierenbeck and Kori Johnson both delivered 2 solo blocks throughout the day to pump up the momentum of the Panthers. Ashtyn Rees powered home 17 aces catipulting Manteno into the lead. Jackie Beck and Schulteis tallied 4 and 2 aces respectively. Offensively, the freshman took turns pounding the ball for a kill. Leading the way was Marshall with 11 and right behind her was Schierenbeck with 10 and Riner with 9. Johnson provided 7 kills, Langlois 4, and Boudreau 3. Assiting in the kills were Rees with 21 and Beck withe 18. As the famous basketball coach John Wooden once said, " Teamwork is not a preference, it is a requirement." That truely showed on Saturday as the girls shared the responsibilities through the duration of the tournament. Way to go Panthers!!
