April 2, 2014By Brent Zhorne of Manteno High School
The Manteno Panthers jumped out to a big second inning lead and held on against Grant Park, capturing a 7-0 victory on Tuesday at Manteno.
The Panther's six runs in the second started with a solo home run by Jack Liss. His towering shot into right field came on the first pitch he saw. An RBI single by Ryan Snider, a two-run double by Drew Nichols, and a sacrifice fly by Lucas Robbins in the second inning helped the Panthers put some runs on the board early.
Liss went 1-2 with a walk, and Jack Morgan posted two hits on three at bats to lead the Panthers' offensive threat. Seven Panther players reached on a total of eight hits.
Manteno's other run came in the fourth inning. Lucas Robbins ran the count full and then beat out the throw from second base. He advanced to second on a passed ball, and was driven in by Morgan on a single to center field.
Morgan (1-0) had a good day on the mound, striking out 11 hitters en route to the the Panthers win. The Panthers' pitcher tossed five innings of shutout ball and allowed only two hits.
The win against Grant Park puts the Panther record at 2-0. If Wednesday's weather cooperates, the Panthers are scheduled to travel to Momence for a 4:30 pm start.
