Billy Liss had three extra base hits to help Manteno (15-1 overall, 1-1 conference) to an 8-3 victory in seven innings over Dwight on Monday at Manteno.
The third baseman homered in the fourth inning and doubled in the second and fifth innings.
Jason Morgan (4-0) got the win for Manteno. He allowed three runs over five innings. The Panther pitcher struck out three, walked four and surrendered four hits.
Manteno was sparked by catcher Ryan Sample and Liss, who teamed up for five hits and three RBIs.
Adam Schaeffer tossed two innings of relief without allowing a run, striking out one while giving up one hit and two walks.
After pushing across one run in the top of the fourth, Dwight HS faced just a 2-1 deficit. An RBI single by Jacob Wardell gave Dwight life but Morgan induced an inning-ending strike out from Jake Thomas.
Manteno scored four runs of its own in the fourth. Manteno scored on a two-run home run by Liss, a fielder's choice, and an RBI single by right fielder Joey DiLeo.
Manteno increased its lead with two runs in the fifth. First baseman Derrick Hosselton singled, bringing home Liss to start the inning. That was followed up by an error that scored Hosselton.
Dwight faced an 8-3 deficit in the top of the sixth after pushing across two runs. A solo home run by Alec Frazier and an RBI single by Carson Banks fueled the comeback effort but stalled when Schaeffer got Dwight’s Aaron Boma to gound into a force out at second base to end the inning.
Manteno travels to Dwight on Tuesday for the Interstate 8 conference rematch.
