Apple tourney gets bigger
August 19, 2011Louisville Male High School
For the first time two teams from outside Kentucky — Columbus (Ohio) School for Girls and Lewisville (N.C.) Forsyth Country Day — will participate in the tournament.
“We’re real excited to have some quality schools from out of the state coming in,” Sacred Heart coach and tournament director Liz Lewis said. “The committee has looked at that for quite some time, and this year the timing was right. … We expect to have even more next year.”
The tournament will be played on two fields at Sacred Heart, starting at 5:15 p.m. today. There will be two divisions, with the Green Apple final set for 6 p.m. Saturday and the Red Apple final slated for 1:45 p.m. Sunday.
Sacred Heart has won seven straight Apple titles and is the defending state champion.
“I look for this team to be very balanced, probably the most balanced team I’ve had so far,” Lewis said. “I’m really looking forward to the season.”
