Cross Country Newsletter Week 1

August 25, 2014
By Eric Alonzo of Macarthur High School

The 2014 cross country team is off and running. The teams have spent a lot of time preparing for what the team believes that they will be a major contender in the district title races for both girl’s and boy’s titles. The district competition the next two years will include new programs that MacArthur has yet to face on a regular basis the past few years. With the new realignment of districts, the Irving Independent School district was place with four Dallas schools and Carrollton R.L. Turner in District 9-5A. The Dallas schools include Dallas Jesuit (boys only), Dallas Skyline, Dallas Sunset and Dallas W.T. White. This will also place the Irving schools in a new Region if the post season is reached and most of the teams at Regionals will be those East of the Dallas area.

The Girl’s team returns a core of runners from last year’s fourth place district team that will look to take one of the top three teams in district this year. Last year’s team finished two points behind the third place team and missed the opportunity to advance to the Regional competition. “I believe we have a strong core of runners, led by Sophomore Madeleine Rowe and Senior Alma Juarez, that can take our program to the next level,” comments Coach Alonzo. Someone to look for is the return of Senior Nicole Rojas, who was the District Junior Varsity Champion. She is coming off a season-ending injury from soccer and will look to contribute when District comes around in late October. “With three of core runners, we have to identify two or three more that will take our program where we want to go this year,” adds Coach Alonzo.

The Boy’s team currently is returning two members of their varsity team, Junior Joaquin Flores and Sophomore Logan Lewis. It will be a few weeks before the rest of the team will be settled and finalized. The boys hope to make history and finish in the top three teams in district.

The season started last week with great results. In the Girls Varsity race, Sophomore Madeleine Rowe and Senior Alma Juarez finished fifth and sixth place overall, respectively. “This was a great result and we are proud of the way they competed,” comments Coach Alonzo. Sophomore Logan Lewis led the boys with a twenty-fifth overall finish in the Boys Varsity race. Making their Cardinal Running debuts were Sophomore Karina Ventura; Junior Emely Fuentes (Academy); and Junior Mariah Ramirez

Runner of the Week: SR Cindy Fonseca

The MacArthur Cross Country program would like to recognize last week’s runner of the week: Senior Cindy Fonseca. This is Cindy’s second year with the cross country program. “Cindy had a great summer getting ready for this season,” comments Coach Alonzo. “We hope she takes it to the next level and will compete for a Varsity position when District comes around,” he added.
