June 11, 2012Lone Tree Community School
The Lady Lions softball team was able to end their week with three straight wins. They beat Pekin 12-2 in five innings, WMU 4-3, and Central Lee 9-3. The Lady Lions are now 7-9 overall and 6-2 in the conference. The Lady Lions have a big doubleheader with conference leader Columbus on Monday at Columbus.
In the Pekin game, the Lady Lions led off the game with four straight walks and were able to take a 4-0 lead after one inning and never looked back. Jenny Jones and Madelyn Flemr both had RBI doubles and Ella Feldman scored three runs. Maggie Schmidt was the winning pitcher with 4 strikeouts and only one walk. She struck out the last three outs of the game!
The WMU game was very close as indicated by the score. Winfield took an early 1-0 lead. The Lady Lions finally struck in the bottom of the fourth behind a sacrifice fly rbi by Abbie Schmidt and a two-run double by Avery Edwards to take a 3-1 lead. WMU came back in the fifth with one run to make it 3-2 and tied it in the top of the 7th on a wild pitch. Elyssa Mills led off the seventh with a single, Maggie Schmidt followed with a walk, the next two batters struck out and Madelyn Flemr ended the game with an rbi single to score Mills with the winning run. Again, Maggie Schmidt was the winning pitcher striking out 6 and only walking 2.
On Friday, the Lady Lions traveled to Central Lee and probably played their most complete game of the year. They were able to put together 10 hits, committed only one error, and received outstanding pitching from Avery Edwards. The team was led by Madelyn Flemr who had a double and a three-run home run. Abbie and Maggie Schmidt combined for five hits on the night. The team received outstanding defensive performances from catcher Jenny Jones and third baseman Makenzie Reynolds. "I'm very proud of how our team has responded since getting beat by Mediapolis."
