INDIANAPOLIS – Class 4A seventh-ranked Indianapolis Cathedral exploded for 30 second-quarter points before fending off a late rally by No. 9 Lawrence North in the Fighting Irish’s 64-59 Warren Central Sectional opening-round win Feb. 26.

Alternating dunks with 3-pointers on one end while forcing the stunned Wildcats into a bevy of unforced errors at the other, Cathedral (20-5) stretched an innocuous 12-4 lead after the first eight minutes into a 36-10 stranglehold after another sweet swish from 6'3" sophomore guard Jalen Coleman two minutes before halftime.

Lawrence North (16-6) managed to stop the bleeding with a 10-point spurt to cut the Irish’s lead to 42-20 at intermission. And things were definitely looking up for the Wildcats when they reeled off 13 straight points to start the second half to slice the gap to just nine.

But time and again, third-year coach Andy Fagan’s Fighting Irish would stem the tide with a key bucket – the least of which was not Coleman’s three just ahead of the third-quarter buzzer for a 50-35 lead.

And with Purdue-bound 6’7” senior forward Basil Smotherman finally succumbing to second-half foul trouble with just under four minutes to play – resulting in a pair of free throws by Coleman (a game-high 18 points) for a 56-41 lead – the Irish did just enough down the stretch to prevail.

Cathedral’s 6’2” senior swingman Garrett Hall added 11 points, while 6’8” senior forward Devin Dixon scored 10 – all in the Irish’s torrid first half when the die was cast.

Smotherman led Lawrence North with 15 points, while 5’10” senior guard Sean Howard added 14 and 6’3” junior guard Daeshon Francis had nine second-half points after being shut out in the first.

Cathedral advances to face Roncalli (10-9), which received a bye, in Friday’s second semifinal. No. 10 Indianapolis Tech (20-4) and defending sectional champion Lawrence Central (10-10), a 44-43 winner over host Warren Central in Wednesday’s other game, will get the weekend action started at 6 p.m. ET.
