Class 4A third-ranked Lawrence North scored 49 points in the first half Nov. 14 as the host Wildcats opened first-year coach Chris Giffin’s tenure as girls basketball coach with a 74-50 victory over Anderson.
Keys for the Wildcats were the fast first-half start (LN led 49-28 at the break) as well as a frenetic defense that forced Anderson into 30 turnovers and limited the Indians to 29 percent shooting. That powerful combination was more than enough for Lawrence North – a defending sectional champion whose lone season under former coach Jim Etherington finished at 18-5 – to overcome 22 turnovers of its own.
Junior Destiny Washington – a transfer this season from Fishers – led the Wildcats with 16 points and was joined in double figures by senior Mikale Rogers (15 points) and sophomore Lamina Cooper (11).
Next up for Lawrence North is a Nov. 20 home game against Indianapolis Tech (1-1), followed by a trip to 4A defending state runner-up second-ranked Columbus North (1-0) Nov. 24.
Anderson (1-1), which had two scorers reach double figures in seniors Taylor Potts (15 points along with eight rebounds) and Darien Thompson (11 points), next will travel to Muncie South Nov. 20 before hosting 4A defending state champion No. 11 North Central (Indianapolis) Nov. 24.
The box score:
