The defenseman played with the US National Development team in Ann Arbor, Mich., the past two years. Skjei attended Lakeville North High School until 2010.

In the press release announcing his selection from the Rangers, Director of Player Personnel Gordy Clark referred to Skjei as an elite skater with a big shot on the point.

He will join the Rangers for its development camp on Monday. He will be a freshman next fall with the University of Minnesota.
