Track and Field Parent Meeting - Thurs. March 6th at 7 pm in the LHS Cafeteria

The LHS 2014 Track and Field season is almost here!
March 3rd is the first official day of practice.
Thursday, March 6th, there will be an important Parent Track and Field meeting at 7:pm in the Lincoln HS Cafeteria.
The Lincoln High School Parent Track and Field Meeting has been changed to this Thursday, March 6th at 7 pm in the LHS Cafeteria. The meeting has been changed as the Swim Team is holding their End of Year Awards in the cafeteria on Wedneday. Sorry for the change!!
This season we will have one of the very best coaching staffs in Lincoln Track and Field history, including a world record holder, multiple Olympic Trials Qualifiers, pro football players, and State Cross Country Champions!
Our returning staff will include Billy McKinney, Laval Short, Suzanne Parry, Kathy Parker, Steve Byers, Christy Schwarz, Kyley Johnson, Arlisha Davis, Dr. Kelley Henry, Caty Leach, and Head Coach Charlotte Richardson. In addition to these coaches, Lincoln has been lucky to hire Elvis Akpla, Eric Mitchum, and Eric Dettman.
Elvis Akpla, a former Lincoln alum, and 2007 State Meet Champion in the long and triple jump, will join us for the 2014 season. He was a wide receiver at Montana State, and was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2012. He will coach both our sprinters and jumpers.
We also welcome Coaches Eric Mitchum and Eric Dettman, both University of Oregon track and field athletes.
Eric Mitchum hurdled at Oregon from 2002 through 2006, and still holds the high hurdle record with a time of 13.38. All American, and Olympic Trials Qualifier, Eric will bring his extraordinary talents to coach our hurdlers.
Eric Dettman ran distance and mid distance for the University of Oregon, with a 1500 PR of 3:51.79 and the 5K in 14.54.19. As a high school runner, he ran for the famed York High School cross country team, in Elmhurst, Illinois and starred in the running film “The Long Green Line”. Eric will assist with the mid and distance group.
Our returning coaches –
Coach McKinney, our horizontal jumps and sprint coach, was a Decathlete at Boise State University. Coach McKinney qualified to run in the Olympic Trials in 1984. At Lincoln High School he has coached many jumpers who have qualified for the State Championships. He 2007 he coached Lincoln HS track and field athlete, Elvis Akpla, to the State Title in both the Triple and Long jump. He repeated this extraordinary feat in 2012, with Lincoln's Alex Sattley winning the State Championship Long and Triple Jumps.
Coach Suzanne Parry, Head Lincoln Cross Country Coach, will assist Coach Richardson with the middle and distance team. This past fall the LHS Cross County boys team won the Metro League Championships. Coach Parry is an avid distance runner and a veteran of many marathons.
Coach Kathy Mills Parker, assistant mid and distance coach, will bring her unique experience and perspective as a world class distance runner to the Lincoln Track and Field Team. In 1978, while at the University of Pennsylvania, Coach Parker set the world record on the track in the 5,000 with a time of 15.32.5.
Coach Laval Short attended high school in Denver, Colorado, participating in track and field, wrestling, and football. After graduating from high school he accepted an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Colorado at Boulder for football. Upon completing his eligibility at Colorado, Coach Short was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the fifth round and played four years of professional football. This will be his thirteenth year as the throws coach for the Lincoln Cardinal Track and Field program.
Coach Christy Schwarz ran and pole vaulted as a student at Lincoln High School. She has come back to coach the Pole Vaulters at Lincoln, and will return this year with the top two men vaulters in the Metro League District.
Coach Kyley Johnson, our high jump coach, was the 3A Oregon State Champion in the high jump with a state meet record of 6' 9 1/4". He competed at the University of Oregon, winning the Pac 10 HJ title as a freshman with a jump of 7' 1/2 ". His personal best in the is 7' 2 1/2 ". Kyley has consistently brought a Lincoln HS high jumper to the state meet the past 3 years.
Coach Steve Byers, assistant distance coach, was an early Oregon distance runner in both cross country and track at Grant High School. In 1965 he won both the PIL Mile Championship and the Oregon State Cross County Championship titles. In college he ran at the University of California lettering in both Cross County and Track as a Steeplechaser.
Coach Arlisha Davis, another of our Lincoln High alums, will assist with the sprinters, and relay teams this season. Arlisha was one of the top sprinters in Oregon during her years at Lincoln, with the 2nd fastest time in Lincoln history of12.26 a in the 100 meters.
Dr. Kelley Henry, our strength and conditioning coach, has extensive experience as a trainer and coach. Dr. Henry has a Ph.D in Kinesiology from Texas Women's University, and a Masters in Exercise Physiology from Springfield College. She was a distance runner during high school and college years.
Head Coach Charlotte Lettis Richardson, will work with the mid and distance runners, as well as overseeing the track and field program. She has coached for over 40 years at the college, high school, middle school, and club levels. She was Co-Head coach in 2007 with Forrest Sherman, when Lincoln HS won both the Boys and Girls 6A State Track and Field Championships. As a national caliber runner in track, cross country, and road racing, she brings to her coaching the experience of being a national caliber athlete, as well as a the knowledge of a coach. In 1976 she qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 1500 meters.
