Moeller - Colerain Showdown this Saturday

Division I, Region 4 final
Saturday, 7:30 p.m. at Nippert Stadium

No. 3-Moeller (9-3) vs. No. 1 Colerain (12-0)

Moeller and Colerain have not played since the Cardinals claimed a 17-10 win Nov. 1, 2008, in a Region 4 quarterfinal at Colerain. That was the third straight year Moeller’s season was ended by Colerain in the playoffs and it was the fourth time in five seasons. Moeller and Colerain also hooked up in the Region 4 final in 2004 when the Cardinals cruised to a 34-6 win on their way winning the school’s only state football title.

Moeller is the third straight Greater Catholic League South opponent Colerain will face in the playoffs this season.

“It’s another explosive offense,” Colerain coach Tom Bolden said. “They’re Moeller. Now we’ve got to face our third GCL opponent in a row. How about that for a No. 1 seed? In order to get out of Region 4, you’ve got to beat three GCL South teams. I just hope we’ve got enough left in the tank next Saturday.”

It’s the 17th straight season a team from the GCL South has played in the Region 4 final. Moeller lost to St. Xavier 35-21 in last season’s Region 4 final at Nippert.

Moeller has seven big-school state titles since high school football playoffs began in Ohio in 1972 – none since 1985 – and the Crusaders are hoping for their 14th regional title. It would be their first since 1997. Colerain’s last Region 4 championship came in 2006.

“I know they’ve got a really good offense,” Colerain senior quarterback Alfred Ramsby said. “But Elder had a really good offense, so we’ve just got to come out and play our game.”

The winner of Saturday’s game will play the winner of the Region 3 final between Pickerington North and Hilliard Davidson in the state semifinals Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. at a neutral site.
