POWERADE FAB 50 Rankings: Week 6

(After games of Tuesday, April 24)

League championship tournaments this week in Hawaii will be followed by the start of state playoffs next week, but in other states there are still a handful of major tournaments to be played.

In Southern California, the Redondo Varsity Classic will provide an opportunity for nine FAB 50 teams to square off.

No. 1 Loyola (Los Angeles), No. 4 Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach), No. 7 Westview (San Diego), No. 8 Otay Ranch (Chula Vista), No. 10 Dana Hills (Dana Point), No. 11 San Clemente, No. 12 Oak Park (Agoura Hills), No. 13 Westlake (Westlake Village) and No. 50 host Redondo Union (Redondo Beach) will all get together this weekend at the loaded tournament.

Since many of the teams also will be in the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs, the Redondo tourney could be more important in the rankings to Westview and Otay Ranch, the two CIF San Diego Section schools.

This week's biggest mover in the rankings is new No. 15 De La Salle (Concord, Calif.). The Spartans went unbeaten at the Bellarmine Prep tourney in San Jose (Calif.), topping Clovis West (Fresno, Calif.) in the championship match 25-18, 25-19. They went from No. 32 to No. 15 in this week's FAB 50.

20-4 The Eagles defeated Malibu (Calif.) last week and will join the crowd this weekend at the Redondo Varsity Classic.

21 (24) Corona Del Sol
Tempe, AZ
15-2 An easy win earlier this week over Dobson (Mesa, Ariz.) helps keep the Aztecs No. 1 in their state.
22 (44) Lincoln-Way East
Frankfort, IL
19-3 This team made it into the finals of the Brother Rice Smack Attack tourney last weekend and didn't lose by much to No. 14 Glenbrook North (Northbrook, Ill.).
23 (37) Buchanan
Clovis, CA
30-5 Coach John Jay took his team to the Brother Rice Smack Attack tourney in Chicago last weekend and the results were positive. The Bears won five of six matches with their only loss coming to finalist Lincoln-Way East.
24 (14) Glenbard East
Lombard, IL
18-4 The Rams lost two of three matches last week, but one of those was to No. 2 Wheaton Warrenville South.
25 (26) Moeller
Cincinnati, OH
12-2 A thrilling five-game win over previously unbeaten and previous No. 17 St. Xavier (Cincinnati) pushes the Crusaders slightly higher in this week's rankings.
26 (33) Saint Francis
Mountain View, CA
24-2 The Lancers had a strong showing in the Bellarmine tourney, in which their only loss was to champion De La Salle (Concord, Calif.). They've also already beaten Bellarmine this week in an important league match.
27 (42) Berkeley Prep School
Tampa, FL
19-2 Both losses that Berkeley Prep has suffered this year have later been avenged. Beating previous No. 15 Columbus (Miami) to win their own tournament is another reason that the Buccaneers are now No. 1 in Florida.
28 (16) Glenbard West
Glen Ellyn, IL
13-2 The Hilltoppers placed third in the Brother Rice Smack Attack by besting Buffalo Grove (Ill.).
29 (29) Fair Lawn

15-0 New Jersey's top-ranked team won the Bloomfield Invitational with a 25-17 finals win over East Brunswick (N.J.). The semifinal victim was Christian Brothers (Lincroft, N.J.) 25-20.
30 (30) Palos Verdes
Palos Verdes Estates, CA
26-6 The Sea Kings beat No. 50 Redondo Union (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Peninsula (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) last week and will play No. 4 Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) next week.
31 (34) Hawaii Baptist Academy
Honolulu, HI
26-4 The Eagles took down Damien (Honolulu) and Le Jardin (Kailua, Hawaii) this past week and sit behind Punahou (Honolulu) as the top team in Division II in the Interscholastic League of Hawaii.
32 (35) Mater Dei
Santa Ana, CA
11-4 It was a good week for the Monarchs as they beat previous No. 27 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) and Lutheran (Orange, Calif.) in a pair of Trinity League matches.
33 (17) Saint Xavier
Cincinnati, OH
12-1 The Bombers have to drop in the rankings this week after losing a match to in-state rival Moeller (Cincinnati).
34 (48) Clovis West
Fresno, CA
21-5 Quality wins for the Golden Eagles at the Bellarmine tournament included those against Mountain View (Calif.) and St. Ignatius (San Francisco).
35 (NR) De Smet Jesuit
Saint Louis, MO
21-1 The Spartans are the No. 1 team in the St. Louis metro area and could move up toward the 25 if they continue their winning ways.
36 (41) Lincoln Way North
Frankfort, IL
15-2 Sophomore Ryan McFarland continues to play well for the Phoenix.
37 (43) Bishop Moore
Orlando, FL
16-2 The Hornets stayed on the heels of Berkeley Prep in Florida by winning matches last week against Dr. Phillips (Orlando) and Lake Howell.
38 (31) Gilbert
Gilbert, AZ
14-2 The Tigers posted a win earlier this week against Mountain View (Mesa, Ariz.).
39 (NR) Mountain View
Mountain View, CA
27-4 Going to the Bellarmine tournament in San Jose wound up providing the ammo to put the Spartans into this week's FAB 50. While they dropped matches to No. 15 De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) and No. 24 Clovis West (Fresno, Calif.), they also got big wins against previously ranked Bellarmine and No. 41 Granite Bay.
40 (15) Christopher Columbus
Miami, FL
18-4 Going to the Berkeley Prep tournament to face strong competition could end up being helpful for the Explorers in the postseason.
41 (18) Granite Bay
Granite Bay, CA
26-6 A 4-2 record at the Bellarmine tourney wasn't what the Grizzlies wanted, but they can still be in the rankings because both De La Salle (Concord) and Mountain View (Calif.) are now higher.
42 (27) Saint John Bosco
Bellflower, CA
19-8 Although the Braves lost twice last week, they stay in the rankings because those losses were both to higher-ranked teams. Their loss to No. 32 Mater Dei also was close.
43 (28) Carmel
Carmel, IN
21-2 The Greyhounds won four of five matches at the Brother Rice (Chicago) Smack Attack, losing to the hosts, 2-1. One of the victims, however, was previous No. 38 Spanish River (Boca Raton, Fla.).
44 (45) Southern Regional
Manahawkin, NJ
16-0 This team scored 2-0 wins over Toms River East (Toms River, N.J.) and Wall (N.J.) to remain unbeaten. Sophomore Mike Gesicki, a 6-foot-6, 215-pound top recruit, leads the team in blocks and is second in kills.
45 (NR) Downers Grove North
Downers Grove, IL
18-2 All of the Chicago area teams have to get rankings points because of what happened in the Brother Rice Smack Attack -- top teams from other states entered and none of them even made it to the finals.
46 (NR) Archbishop Alter
Kettering, OH
10-3 A head-to-head win over previous No. 40 Hilliard Darby (Hilliard, Ohio) puts this team back into the FAB 50. Another key win came against previously unbeaten Lakota West (West Chester, Ohio).
47 (NR) Saint Louis University
Saint Louis, MO
19-3 The Junior Billikens have handed No. 35 DeSmet (St. Louis) its only loss, but aren't ranked as high due to other losses.
48 (46) Thousand Oaks
Thousand Oaks, CA
16-7 The Lancers dropped another match, but it was to league rival Westlake (Westlake Village, Calif.), which has been in the top 15 of the FAB 50 for almost the entire season.
49 (50) Miami Sunset
Miami, FL
15-2 Beating higher ranked Columbus (Miami) will be on the minds of the Knights as they head into this weekend's Greater Miami Athletic Conference playoffs.
50 (49) Redondo Union
Redondo Beach, CA
15-9 It's another week and another loss for the Sea Hawks, but we're still leaving them in the FAB 50. That loss was to No. 30 Palos Verdes (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) and we're also giving them benefit of the doubt as the host school for this weekend's Redondo Varsity Classic.
Dropped out: Previous No. 36 Vernon Hills (Vernon Hills, Ill.); No. 38 Spanish River (Boca Raton, Fla.); No. 39 Bellarmine Prep (San Jose, Calif.); No. 40 Hilliard Darby (Hilliard, Ohio); No. 47 Rocklin (Rocklin, Calif.).
