Scecina eager for Central Catholic rematch in Class A football final

Neither Central Catholic football coach Kevin O’Shea nor Scecinacoach Ott Hurrle were surprised by their teams’ Class A state championship game rematch.

Central Catholic is the three-time defending Class A champion, including last season’s 38-7 victory over Scecina. The Crusaders return 13 starters and were primed for a return to Lucas Oil Stadium.

“They’ve got almost everybody back,” said O’Shea, who can become the first coach to win four straight state championships. “We put on last year’s film and we put on this year’s film and we’re going, ‘Same kids.’ From an experience standpoint and from a physicality standpoint, they’ve probably got a little bit of an advantage just because they’ve all been here before and they probably think they’ve got something to prove.”

Friday’s game marks the eighth time two teams have played for a state championship in back-to-back seasons. In four of the previous seven, the team that lost the first game won the second.

Central Catholic won its lone rematch, beating Fountain Central in 2009 and ‘10. The last team to avenge its loss was Seeger, which lost to Ritter in 2003 and beat the Raiders the following season.
