Central Catholic was just under two minutes away from getting back to .500 on the basketball season Saturday night against Andrean, but a late 59er run handed the Knights a 68-64 loss.
"It was a close game all around," Knights guard Jake Churchill said. "I thought our defense got a lot better as the game went on. I just think it came down to who was making shots there at the end."
Class 3A No. 4 Andrean (8-1) relied heavily on the size advantage of 6-foot-9 senior center Josh James and 6-4 junior forward Skyler Moss in the first half. The duo scored 26 of the 59ers' 38 first half points.
"They were too big for us, first of all," CC coach Dave Barrett said. "They kind of dominated the inside and on the boards early."
Central Catholic was able to keep within striking distance and headed to halftime only down 38-32.
The second half saw the Knights' defense limit the offensive production of James and Moss, and Central Catholic was able to capitalize on some opportunities.
A 14-7 run led by Churchill and senior guard Danny Anthrop helped CC to a 62-60 lead, their first since early in the first quarter, with a little under two minutes to go in the game.
After they gained the lead however, the Knights found themselves unable to stop Nick Davidson, who will play at Valparaiso University. Davidson scored six in a row, and the Knights couldn't bounce back.
"We can't let good players get open like that," said Anthrop, who was guarding Davidson during most of that late run. "He had his chance and he just took advantage of the opportunity."
Churchill scored 20, Anthrop put up 17 and Andrew Hubertz scored 12 for the Knights.
Davidson led Andrean with 26. Moss had 18, and James had 14
