In addition to the eight winners, top-ranked Perry Meridian had two runners-up and a trio of fourth-place finishers in totaling 267.5 points. That was well ahead of second-place No. 11 host Warren Central (212.5), which finished with five champs among 13 placers overall.

Franklin Central (154.5 points with a dozen top-six placers) finished third, followed by Lawrence Central (123, 11) in fourth, Lawrence North (93, seven) fifth, and Ben Davis (74, seven) sixth at the 14-school event.

Lawrence Central ended up with six Top 6 finishes, including runner-up finishes from No. 8-ranked Riley Newkirk at 113 and No. 8 Myron Hamilton at 220. Third-year coach Tom Corbett’s Bears also got third-place efforts from Scott Swingle at 145 and Wendell Short at 170 and fourths from Max Brutus at 138 and Jonathon Watkins at 160.

Lawrence North collected a trio of runner-up finishes: Juwan Bartlett at 138, Ivory Duerson at 152 and Joe Fowler at 170. The Wildcats also took two thirds (No. 7 Alex Sparks at 120 and Andrew Rattay at 160) and got a fourth-place effort from Dan Reed at 145.

“We have the toughest schedule in the state without a doubt (but) we’re getting there,” said first-year LN coach Brian Seltzer. “We placed fifth with only nine wrestlers.

“Some guys turned the corner today – we had two guys (Duerson and Fowler) with 3-7 records make the finals.”
