GBB: Bears nearly pull off shocker in 40-39 loss at 4A #2 Columbus North

COLUMBUS – Sophomore Ali Patberg scored 23 points and classmate Hannah Poindexter sank a key fourth-quarter free throw Dec. 15, helping the Columbus North girls basketball team pull out a 40-39 victory over Lawrence Central in Memorial Gym.
 
Junior Emmy Schabel contributed eight points for the Class 4A No. 2 Bull Dogs, who improved to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in Conference Indiana with the result.
 
Senior Calyn Hosea dropped in 13 points and junior Kyra Tucker had 10 points for the Bears (3-5, 0-3).
 
The visitors used a strong third quarter to take a 33-30 edge at the third stop. But Columbus North rebounded in the final period to squeeze out the narrow victory on its home court – Patberg scoring nine points in the period and Poindexter adding a free throw with 3:19 to go to provide the decisive point.
 
Lawrence Central had a chance to win in the final 25 seconds after defending 4A state runner-up Columbus North was called for traveling. But CN junior Kelsey Cunningham forced a held ball on the Bears' Breanna Jones with 7.6 seconds left.
 
LC had the possession arrow and got two shots in the remaining time, but Calyn Hosea missed a running layup attempt and McKenzy Telfair missed a putback attempt, with Cunningham corraling the rebound to seal the outcome.
 
Columbus North returns to action Dec. 19 when it visits city-rival Columbus East (5-3).

Lawrence Central is off till the Dec. 28 Shelbyville Shootout, where the Bears will battle 4A No. 10 Westfield (10-1) at noon before competing that night against either Decatur Central (5-5) or host Shelbyville (2-8).
