November 15, 2012By E. Shawn Aylsworth of Lawrence Central High School
Junior forward Kyra Tucker poured in 30 points while adding nine rebounds and three assists Nov. 10 as host Lawrence Central captured its season-opening girls basketball game with a 64-44 victory over visiting Indianapolis Northwest.
The Bears moved out from a 14-12 lead after one quarter with a 16-8 advantage in the second to make it a double-digit contest at the half, 30-20. LC, which had 20 steals on the night, then put the game away with a 20-9 fourth quarter.
Fifth-year coach John Albers’ Bears shot 42 percent from the field, including a 4-of-11 rate from behind the 3-point line, and were a solid 14 of 20 from the free throw stripe. That compared with 36 percent shooting for the Space Pioneers (0-2), who stayed somewhat close behind 5-of-11 sniping from behind the arc yet managed just 11 of 25 from the line.
Ninth-year Northwest coach Charlie Brown’s visitors were led by 18 points from Maycee Davis and 13 from Adelena Sibande.
Next up for Lawrence Central, which also got 10 points apiece from senior forward Chalyn Hosea and senior guard Breanna Jones as well as eight assists, four rebounds, and six steals from sophomore guard McKenzy Telfair, is a big Nov. 14 trip to Fortville to face Class 3A No. 2 Mt. Vernon (1-0), the defending state runner-up.
Northwest, meanwhile, will prepare for a three-game homestand against Indianapolis Cathedral (0-1) Nov. 13, Covenant Christian (Indianapolis) (0-2) Nov. 15, and 4A third-ranked Lawrence North (0-0) Nov. 17.
