Freshman Sydney Shelton’s 3-pointer with 1:07 left to play was the difference Nov. 13 as Class 3A second-ranked defending state runner-up Mt. Vernon (Fortville) held off visiting 4A Lawrence Central, 40-39, in girls basketball action.

The low-scoring contest was tight throughout, with Mt. Vernon leading 12-11 after one and LC owning 27-23 and 37-36 advantages following the second and third periods, respectively.

LC junior forward Kyra Tucker (a game-high 18 points) hit a three to put the Bears ahead 47-44, but senior Rachel Houck countered with a 3-pointer of her own for the Marauders with under three minutes to play. Shelton’s clutch three – plus one of a dozen Mt. Vernon steals in the closing seconds that followed a pair of missed LC free throws – were just enough for the Marauders (2-0) to survive.

Mt. Vernon placed three players in double figures: Houck (14 points), Shelton (12, including a 7-of-9 effort from the free throw line), and junior Erica Moore (11). Next up for the Marauders is their Nov. 16 Hoosier Heritage Conference opener at 3A No. 18 Rushville (0-1) followed by a Nov. 24 home game against 3A No. 8 Hamilton Heights (2-1).

Fifth-year coach John Albers’ Bears (1-1), who led by as many as seven points in the second half, also got double-digit scoring from sophomore forward McKenzy Telfair (15 points) and senior forward Calyn Hosea (10). LC will keep up the competition level in their next game Nov. 16 against visiting Class 4A No. 17 Pike (1-0) in each school’s Conference Indiana opener.

The box score:
