Bonus Point Win Sends Lansdowne to the Top

Lansdowne FC 37

Dolphin 7

Lansdowne went top of Division 1A by virtue of points difference as we bagged a bonus point win in the victory over Dolphin at home. In the end a comprehensive scoreline however Lansdowne were made to work very hard by a fiercely competitive Dolphin side.

Dolphin made the early running with a converted try from Rory Scanlon after only 3 minutes putting them 7 points ahead. Lansdowne slowly dragged themselves back in to the game and trying to establish themselves in Dolphin territory and capitalise. First they struck with a try from early replacement Mark Roche who spun over in the left corner for an unconverted try after some good work from the Lansdowne pack.

Lansdowne applied more pressure and were duly rewarded with a try from scrum half John Cooney who was excellent through out, sniping over for a try from a scrum close in. The try went unconverted with the score now 10 - 7 in Lansdowne's favour. Dolphin surged back into the Lansdowne half and were unlucky not to go level when Keeshan uncharacteristically put a kickable penalty wide.

It was Lansdowne's turn to apply the pressure and they did so at the scrum to good effect forcing a penalty which allowed Ronaldson to give his side an attacking lineout close to the line. Following a Dolphin sin binning Willie Earl scrambled over to give Lansdowne a decisive lead going into the break. Ronaldson converted to leave the score 17 - 7 at half-time.

After the break Lansdowne kept the score board ticking over with a couple of penalties from Ronaldson. The game was disreupted by sin binnings on both sides which at one stage left both teams with only 13 men on the pitch. Lansdowne dominated possession and were duly rewarded with another try from John Cooney which sealed the vitally important bonus point. Jordi Murphy added to the try count in the dying moments of the game to leave the final score 37 - 7.

The bonus point proved vital as although Garryowen had an excellent win away to Cork Con they did not register a bonus point thus allowing Lansdowne to sneak ahead on point difference. Next up is Garryowen in a top of the table clash in Dooradoyle on Jan 26th. Get in touch with the club about travelling down to Dooradoyle - We need as much support as possible in this crunch game.
