Clontarf 18 Lansdowne 20

An injury-time penalty from Lansdowne debutant Tom Daly was enough to give Lansdowne a rare victory against Clontarf in Castle Avenue.

Lansdowne had been cruelly beaten by a last second penalty in their last league game out against Cork Constitution which made the nature of this victory even sweeter.

It was Clontarf who took an early lead when Richie Lane with the wind at his back converted an early penalty. However Lansdowne were quick to respond with captain Ross McCarron going in under the posts for a 19th minute try converted by Ronaldson.

Clontarf soon hit back with a try of their own with Timmy McCoy sparking a Tarf attack which Lane eventually finished off in the right corner making it 10 - 7 Tarf.

Clontarf moved 13 - 7 ahead as Lane slotted a longe range penalty for Tarf just on the stroke of half time.

With the wind at their backs Lansdowne started the second half on the front foot and dominated territory but could not break down Tarf until they were awarded what looked a kickable penalty 20 minutes in. Ronaldson elected to kick to the corner setting Lansdowne up with a lineout five metres out. The Lansdowne pack who were beginning to out muscle Clontarf up front drove over from the lineout with flanker Clive Ross touching down.

Daly converted to give Lansdowne a slender lead of 14 - 13. A few minutes later he extended the lead slotting over a penalty close in to give a Lansdowne a four point lead with 6 minutes to go.

Clontarf fought back and with 4 minutes left on the clock Tadhg Furlong crashed over for a try from a well ececuted lineout peel close in. Crucially Clontarf missed the ensuing conversion leaving them 1 point ahead at 18-17.

Lansdowne came fighting back with Tadgh Beirne and Clive Ross leading the way with strong charges forward. In the dying seconds Clontarf were penalised for going over the top of a ruck and Daly stepped up to slot the penalty over and give Lansdowne a well deserved victory.
