Vikings fall to Warriors in season opener
August 31, 2013By Sam Thomas of Lamar High School - Arlington
The Lamar Vikings looked for a better start to the 2013 season, but fell to the South Grand Prairie Warriors 38-31 in the season opener at Cravens Field on Friday night.
Sophomore quarterback Shane Buechele threw for 242 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 68 on 10 attempts in his varsity debut, but when the Vikings faced a fourth down and eight from the Warrior 15-yard line, Buechele was stopped three yards short on a scramble that gave the ball back to the Warriors with one minute left in the game. South Grand Prairie quarterback Tony Nicholson took a knee to run out the clock and give the Warriors the seven point victory. Nicholson completed 8 of his 13 passing attempts for 157 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 163 yards on 19 attempts, including a 68 yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
Senior wide receiver Andra Lemons-Hicks had a productive game for the Vikings, pulling in 5 catches for 83 yards, but it was senior Jaries King who made the timely plays at receiver for Lamar, including a 30-yard catch on 4th and four from the Warrior's 47 to set up the late fourth quarter push and a 70 yard touchdown catch in the third quarter. Senior running back Jamal Kemp led the Vikings in rushing with 72 yards on 15 attempts.
The Vikings face Irving Nimtiz next Friday at Irving Schools Stadium and return to Cravens Field on Sept. 13 for a homecoming matchup against Keller Central.
