GHSA to set 2012 classes on Tuesday

GHSF Daily projects lineup for 6-classification setup

The GHSA's reclassification committee will meet Tuesday to place Georgia's 440 member high schools into six classifications for the 2012-13 and 2013-14 academic years, the GHSA announced Wednesday.

That means that the GHSA just received the fall enrollment numbers from the Georgia Department of Education, which sets the reclassification process into motion.

Meanwhile, GHSF Daily took those DOE numbers and used them to project the six classifications in advance of Tuesday's meeting, after which the GHSA is expected to post the official results online.

Click here to download GHSF Daily's projections. Note that schools that do not have football teams are marked with an asterisk.

Please keep these things in mind:

*GHSF Daily got its numbers from the DOE, not the GHSA. GHSF Daily's projections are not based on any recent information or insights provided by the GHSA and should be used as information only.

*Our projections place 15.5 percent of member schools in each classification, except for Class A, which contains 22 percent of schools, per GHSA stipulations. The GHSA has the leeway to make the top five classifications make up between 14 to 17 percent of schools if it makes travel and region placement more sensible. On our spreadsheet, we indicate those borderline schools (where the 14 to 17 percent will fall) in each class with bold red highlight.

*The GHSA is using enrollment for 9th through 11th grades. Those are the totals you will see in the first column to the right of each school. For example, Mill Creek has 3,479 students in its high school, but 2,766 in grades 9-11. The GHSA uses the 2,766 to classify.

*Our projections of private schools are based on the GHSA's figures from 2010. We do not have recent enrollment numbers for private schools. Most private schools will fall into Class A, so having the latest numbers is not critical in most cases.

*In a few instances, the GHSA will make enrollment adjustments for schools about to open, such as Bethany Bend in north Fulton County. We did not make reductions to schools that will lose students to Bethany Bend.

Class AA Playoff Preview

Each day this week, we are looking at the playoff draw for one of the five classifications, continuing today with Class AA. Here are five interesting facts about each of the 16 games, with an emphasis on playoff history. Which four schools are the only ones to reach the quarterfinals or better each of the past five seasons? Hint: They're playing each other this week. Find out below.

Favorite: Buford

Best draw: North Oconee

Worst draw: Pierce County

Sleeper: Blessed Trinity

Best first-round matchup: Lovett at Carver-Columbus

Northeast (6-4) at Dublin (9-1)

- Northeast made the playoffs in 2003, 2006, 2008 and 2009 but is seeking its first win since beating Thomasville 20-13 in the 2002 Class AA first round. Northeast has three playoff victories in its history, which began in 1970.

- At 43-40 in eight seasons, Bruce Mullins is the winningest coach in Northeast history.

- At 98-26-1 in 10 seasons, Roger Holmes this season can become the first Dublin coach to win 100 games.

- Dublin is 12-1-1 in playoff games at the Shamrock Bowl under Holmes. The two non-victories were historic. One was a monumental upset to Cook in the 2005 Class AA second round. Dublin was 11-0 and had outscored opponents 596-10 to that point. The other was a 13-13 tie in the AA final of 2006.

- These schools have played each other twice in football. Dublin won 21-13 in 2002. Northeast won 21-17 in 2003.

Westminster (6-4) at Callaway (7-3)

- Westminster is 11-1 in the first round since the GHSA expanded the playoffs to 32 teams in 1996, but has lost five consecutive second-round games.

- Westminster has won five straight since a 1-4 start, the key victory a 21-2 decision over Lovett.

- Callaway also played Lovett, the teams' one common opponent. Callaway lost 19-7.

- Callaway lost in the first round in each of its first seven trips to the playoffs, but the Cavaliers have advanced at least a round each of the past three seasons and got to the quarterfinals in 2009.

- Callaway defeated Westminster 35-31 in the second round of the 2009 playoffs in the only previous meeting between these schools.

Jefferson (8-2) at Calhoun (10-0)

- Calhoun ranks second in Class AA scoring offense (45.2 points per game). Jefferson ranks eighth (34.1).

- Calhoun has won a region title and at least 10 games for 11 straight seasons. The streak of 10-win seasons ranks fifth in state history, tied with Camden County's streak that also started in 2001.

- Jefferson has not won a playoff game on the road since 1977, a streak of 12 losses.

- Jefferson's best finish is the Class A final in 1977. Jefferson has never advanced to the quarterfinals otherwise.

- This is the first meeting between these north Georgia schools in football, although Calhoun coach Hal Lamb is familiar with the Dragons. Lamb played at Commerce, Jefferson's arch-rival.

Tattnall Co. (6-4) at Brooks Co. (8-2)

- Tattnall County has never won a playoff game on the road (0-5).

- Tattnall County's first-round victory over Southwest of Macon last year was the Battle Creek Warriors' first playoff victory since 1996. The school also won its first region title, 2-AA.

- Brooks County has won its past six first-round playoff games.

- Brooks County's last three first-round defeats have been to teams that have won state championships - 1996 Washington County, 2000 Americus and 2001 Americus.

- Brooks County defeated Tattnall County 41-13 in the 2008 Class AA first round. That's the only previous meeting between these schools.

Gordon Central (7-3) at N. Oconee (10-0)

- North Oconee is an 8-year-old school making its fourth playoff appearance. In 2008 and 2009, North Oconee lost in the second round to an unbeaten team that would reach the finals (Buford in 2008, Calhoun in 2009).

- North Oconee ranks third in scoring offense (42.3 points per game) and second in scoring defense (7.0) in Class AA.

- North Oconee is one of three Oconee County teams in the playoffs. The others are Athens Academy and Prince Avenue Christian.

- Gordon Central has a winning record and a playoff berth for the first time since 2005.

- Gordon Central has won two postseason games in its history, which dates to 1985. The Warriors have never played a playoff game at home.

Thomasville (6-4) at Appling Co. (9-1)

- Appling County reached the Class AA semifinals in 1999 and has not gotten out of the second since then, losing three times in the second round and six in the first.

- J.T. Pollock, a Screven County graduate, is 45-29-1 in his seven seasons at Appling County. He passed Steve Pennington (40-26) and Bob Griffith (40-8) in victories among Appling coaches and trails only John Stephens (50-52).

- Thomasville is 47-36-1 in the postseason since 1948, when the GHSA began running the state playoffs. It won state titles in 1958, 1973, 1974 and 1988.

- Thomasville won overtime games against Region 1-AA rivals Early County (13-12) and Cook (17-14). Losing both would've kept the Bulldogs out of the playoffs for the first time since 2004.

- Thomasville leads the series between these south Georgia schools 5-1, although Appling County won the last meeting 20-7 in the 1999 Class AA second round.

Bleckley Co. (6-4) at Lamar Co. (10-0)

- Bleckley County reached the Class AA quarterfinals in 2006 with victories over Savannah Christian and Fitzgerald. No other Bleckley team has won a playoff game. The school began playing varsity football in 1977.

- Bleckley County is allowing 27.2 points per game, the most of any Class AA playoff team.

- Lamar County ranks fourth in scoring offense (40.1 points per game) and seventh in scoring defense (11.0) in Class AA.

- Lamar County is seeking its first playoff victory since beating Chattooga 21-16 in the 2001 Class AA first round. Lamar made the quarterfinals the year before, its best finish ever.

- This is a rematch of a regular-season game that Lamar County won 27-21. Lamar leads the series 6-4. These middle Georgia schools have played each season since 1996.

Heard County (6-4) at Blessed Trinity (6-4)

- Heard County has achieved eight consecutive winning seasons, the longest streak of its kind in the history of the school, which began varsity football in 1972.

- Heard County is 5-18 all-time in postseason games. Its best finish was getting to the Class A quarterfinals in 1990.

- Blessed Trinity is 3-2 against playoffs teams, with both losses against No. 1-ranked Buford. The Titans have beaten Benedictine, Westminster and Lovett. Blessed Trinity's schedule is ranked the hardest in AA by the Maxwell Ratings.

- Neither school ranks in the top 25 of scoring offense or defense in Class AA. Blessed Trinity is 29th in points (20.3) and 27th in points allowed (22.3). Heard is 26th (22.6) and 28th (23.8)

- This is the first meeting between these schools in football.

Temple (6-4) at Buford (10-0)

- Buford is seeking to become the first school in Georgia history to win five consecutive state titles. West Rome won four from 1982 to 1985.

- These teams have one common opponent. Buford beat Carver of Columbus 35-7. Temple lost to Carver 42-0.

- Temple is making its first playoff appearance since 2005, the year of its only playoff victory. Temple defeated Landmark Christian 14-13 in the first round. Temple is 1-7 in the postseason, with all eight games on the road.

- Temple's schedule is rated the third-easiest in Class AA among schools playing a region schedule, according to the Maxwell Ratings. Buford's schedule is rated No. 2.

- This is the first meeting between these schools in football.

Jefferson Co. (7-3) at Putnam Co. (8-2)

- Putnam County got its first playoff victory in eight years last season, beating Appling County 20-14 in overtime.

- Putnam County won a Class C championship in 1967 and reached a Class AA final in 1996 under the same coach, Al Reaves, who is not related to the current coach, Ben Reaves.

- Both teams have top-10 scoring defenses. Jefferson is allowing 12.5 points per game. Putnam is allowing 12.3.

- Jefferson County has won six straight games, including a 26-7 decision over Region 3-AA champion Dublin, since starting 0-2 in region play and 1-3 overall.

- Jefferson County is 2-1 all-time against Putnam County. All games took place in the 1990s.

Cook (6-4) at Pierce Co. (8-2)

- Cook has won nine road playoff games since 2000. Only Lovett, with 10, has more in the state.

- Cook is a No. 4 seed. Only 21 fourth seeds have reached the quarterfinals since the playoffs expanded to 32 teams in 1996. Cook is the only school to do it twice (2006, 2009).

- Pierce County won its first region title (2-AA) this year since 1995. Now, the Bears are seeking their first playoff victory since 2002, when they made the quarterfinals and lost to Buford.

- Pierce County has the highest home-field advantage of any team in Class AA, according to the Maxwell Ratings. Maxwell also rates Pierce's season the most unlikely good season of any team in AA.

- Cook leads the series between these schools 8-3. That includes one playoff game, a 49-0 Cook victory in the 1990 first round.

Elbert Co. (9-1) at Pepperell (7-3)

- Pepperell won a Class AA title in 1990 with a 15-0 record. Elbert County won a AA title in 1995 with a 14-1 record. They've never met in football.

- Elbert County ranks third in scoring defense, allowing 8.3 points per game. Pepperell ranks 31st at 26.2.

- Pepperell has reached the playoffs each season since 2005.

- Two of Pepperell's losses have come to second-ranked Calhoun - 39-7 and 59-20.

- Elbert County has lost nine of its last 10 playoff games dating to 1996. The lone victory came in 2002.

McIntosh Co. Acad. (4-6) at Fitzgerald (9-1)

- McIntosh County Academy is scoring 11.6 points per game, the fewest among Class AA playoff teams. Fitzgerald's 35.3 points scored per game ranks sixth.

- McIntosh County broke a five-game losing streak in first-round playoff games in 2010 with a 22-14 victory over Lamar County.

- Fitzgerald's schedule is rated fifth-toughest in Class AA by the Maxwell Ratings.

- Fitzgerald is 5-0 against playoff teams. McIntosh County Academy is 0-5.

- Fitzgerald has played and beaten McIntosh County Academy twice - 34-8 in 1988 and 35-0 in 1989.

Adairsville (9-1) at Banks Co. (7-3)

- Banks County has played only one playoff team, the fewest of any AA team in the field. Banks County lost to North Oconee 41-0. Banks County's schedule is rated the easiest in AA among teams playing a region schedule, according to the Maxwell Ratings.

- Banks County's Phillip Jones, who was Ware County's offensive coordinator last season, is in his first year in Homerville. He is one of two first-year coaches who are Brookwood alumni in the playoffs. The other is Archer head coach Andy Dyer.

- Adairsville has played only one AA playoff team, Pepperell, and lost 34-14. But Adairsville beat Class AAA playoff qualifier Ridgeland 17-14.

- Adairsville is in the playoffs for the first time since 2003. Adairsville made four straight finals (1969-72), then two straight semifinals, but has not advanced past the second round since.

- These north Georgia schools have never played each other in football.

Lovett (7-3) at Carver-Columbus (9-1)

- Carver ranks fifth in scoring offense (39.7 points per game) and tied for third in scoring defense (8.3).

- Carver and Lovett are two of the only four Georgia schools to reach the quarterfinals each of the past five seasons. The others are Buford and Lincoln County.

- Lovett's run to the semifinals last season came as a No. 4 seed. Only eight fourth seeds out of 568 since 1996 have made the semifinals.

- Lovett has won 10 playoff games on the road since 2000. That's the most of any school in Georgia.

- This is the first meeting between these schools in football.

Morgan Co. (8-2) at Laney (8-2)

- Morgan County has won playoff games in each decade from the 1950s through 2000-09 but is looking for its first in the 2010-19 decade.

- Morgan County has not won a playoff game since 2005.

- Laney has not won a playoff game since 2006.

- From 1955 to 1966, these schools won seven state titles. Morgan County won five (1955-56, 1958-59, 1962) in the GHSA. Laney won two (1961, 1966) in the GIA. Neither has played in a state championship game since.

- Laney has played and beaten Morgan County twice - 20-17 in 2004 and 13-10 in 2005.
