Swainsboro's 0-3 start not expected

In his first season as a head coach, David Johnson led Swainsboro to its first 10-0 regular season since the state championship year of 2000.

And it was no piece of cake, he said.

"Just because you're 10-0 doesn't mean it was easy," Johnson told GHSF Daily on Thursday. "When I finished last season, I probably was as exhausted as ever I've been as a coach. It took me a month before I felt like I was really rested up. It's a crazy livelihood. Talk about roller coasters. It's something else, now."

Now, Johnson is rolling down the other side of the hill. The Tigers are 0-3 for the first time since 2002.

But Swainsboro is not alone. There are 64 winless teams in Georgia. Swainsboro is just more conspicuous than the rest.

Swainsboro returned an all-state candidate at fullback in Quan Gardner, a 230-pounder, but he has been injured and missed last week's game against Dodge County, which drove 90 yards in the fourth quarter for a winning touchdown in a 13-9 victory. Swainsboro also has struggled at quarterback in the Wing-T but now settled on a freshman to run it in Da'Korey Somerville.

"We're not going to use that rebuilding excuse, though," Johnson said. "We expect better. We think we're capable of winning every Friday night. We've just got to get that first one and get some confidence back. If we do that, this team can make a run."

The Tigers play tonight against Jefferson County, another team that has struggled unexpectedly. A year ago, Swainsboro and Jefferson County were Region 3-AA's best two teams. Both were undefeated when they played each other, and Swainsboro won 38-37 on a two-point conversion in overtime.

Here are the five winless teams that stand out the most:

*Apalachee: The Wildcats were 12-1 in 2009 and started 5-1 in 2010 before finishing 6-4. This season, they feature Stanley Williams, a sophomore running back who has committed to Georgia. But they are 0-3 for the first time since 2002 after close losses to Habersham Central (38-35) and Salem (14-7) and a shootout loss to state-ranked Flowery Branch (52-35). Tonight, they play at 4-0 Heritage of Conyers.

*Roswell: The Hornets are 0-4 for the first time since 1952. If there's a winless team that can win a region, it's Roswell. The Region 6-AAAAA opener is tonight at North Forsyth (0-4). Roswell won the region last year after an 0-3 start. All four losses have come against playoff contenders, including state-ranked Walton and Norcross.

*Miller County: The Pirates have won at least one round in the playoffs each of the past three seasons (only seven other Class A schools can say that.) But they're 0-3 this season for the first time since 2006. Star running back T.T. Barber was moved to quarterback this season, but the team has managed only eight points in three games.

*Savannah Country Day: SCD is 0-4 after a 3-1 start last year toward a 6-4 finish. This season was expected to be a rough one. Graduated are QB Tate O'Connor (2,401 yards passing), RB Morris Watson (1,074 yards rushing) and WR Kevin Blackburne (53 catches, 1,002 yards).

*Swainsboro: The Tigers hope to get Gardner back for the Jefferson County game. He rushed for 1,255 yards last season and scored the winning touchdown against Jefferson County.

Thursday Night Recap

Suttles leads East Paulding to 63-0 rout

Andrej Suttles scored four touchdowns to lead East Paulding, ranked No. 6 in Class AAAA, to a 63-0 victory over North Paulding on Thursday night in a Region 5-AAAA North game.

Suttles scored on a 36-yard reception in the first quarter, then scored two more touchdowns as East Paulding (5-0, 2-0) broke open the game with 35 points in the second quarter for a 42-0 halftime lead. Suttles' scores came on a 65-yard reception and a 16-yard run on a reverse. He added a 75-yard punt return for a touchdown in the second half.

Lorenz Suttles, Andrej's younger brother, returned a mishandled punt 7 yards for a score, and Kamani Thomas had a 43-yard touchdown run.

North Paulding is 2-3, 0-2.

*Fitzgerald 56, Albany 21: Senior fullback Scottie Griffin ran for 255 yards and five touchdowns on 14 carries for the Purple Hurricanes. Fitzgerald, ranked No. 9 in Class AA, is 4-1 overall and 1-0 in Region 1-AA. Albany is 3-2, 0-1.

In The News

Jones brothers play in memory of father

Central Gwinnett wide receiver Malachi Jones is playing with a heavy heart this season. His father, Andre Jones, died in June from a brain aneurysm at age 42.

Andre Jones also is the father of Notre Dame wide receiver T.J. Jones, a former all-state player from Gainesville. T.J. Jones was better known as Tai-ler Jones when he had 76 receptions for 1,399 yards and 18 touchdowns on Gainesville's Class AAA runner-up team.

"Every second, when I'm not thinking about schoolwork or football, I'm thinking about him," Tai-ler Jones told the Chicago Tribune in a story published Thursday. "It has put a toll on me."

Malachi, who played for Wesleyan last season, opened up to Brandon Brigman of the Gwinnett Daily Post in a story last week. It was Malachi who found his father passed out at their home in June.

Malachi returned to the field two weeks later for 7-on-7 passing tournaments.

"Call me crazy, but every time the wind blew, and it blew at odd times, I felt like it was him telling me to get it together or great job," Malachi told the Gwinnett Daily Post. "That was a good experience. It was time to get back on the field after about a week and half being away."

Malachi played at Gainesville with his older brother as a freshman, then transferred to Wesleyan and played for two seasons. Central coach Todd Wofford was on Gainesville's staff when Malachi was there, and Malachi chose to reunite with him.

Malachi Jones is having a big year. He had 11 catches for 276 yards and four touchdowns in the 63-55 loss to South Gwinnett in the Georgia Dome last week. He has 28 catches for 462 yards in Central's 3-1 start.

Foster taking on bigger load for Vidalia

Vidalia junior Juan Foster is having the kind of season expected of a player who rushed for 1,400 yards as a sophomore, but he's becoming a larger factor on both sides of the ball.

In last week's 28-14 victory over Metter, he rushed for 148 yards and scored three touchdowns. He also got his first start at linebacker and had nine tackles in the first half.

For the season, he has rushed for 431 yards and scored seven touchdowns on 47 carries. He has played only 12 quarters in Vidalia's 4-0 start.

"Juan is small [5 feet 8, 170 pounds] but very quick," Vidalia coach Lee Chomskis said. "He has great vision with incredible feet, catches the ball out of the backfield very well. He is a pure football player."

Hot start no surprise for Jones, Allatoona

Miles Jones rushed for 1,939 yards last season as a junior and became Allatoona's first all-state player, and it appears the running back is heading for a repeat performance.

The only difference this year is that Jones and Allatoona are not surprising anyone with a 4-0 start and No. 6 state ranking in Class AAA. Allatoona is a fourth-year school.

Allatoona coach Gary Varner calls Jones one of the premier inside-the-tackles runners in Georgia. Jones has rushed for 671 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns.

"He's very powerful and fast," Varner said. "He's like 5-10, 205, and he can really go. It's the combination. He's fast and he's quick, but he's really powerful. That's what makes the difference in him."

Jones' size - he's listed at 5-8 on some recruiting Web sites - is apparently the thing that keeps him from having any scholarship offers from major Division I schools. Varner expects that will change. Jones has been invited to games by Georgia, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, Kentucky and others.

"He's getting a lot of people calling," Varner said. "He's not the No. 1 guy on their lists. It's just a question of where it's going to happen. The recruiting game is crazy."

Random Stuff

Funny story from the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer: Carver of Columbus chartered a bus for its fans to go see the Carver-LaGrange game at the Georgia Dome last weekend. It seems that several of the fans got on the wrong bus headed to Atlanta - one chartered by the NAACP for people going to protest the execution of death-row inmate Troy Davis. The fans were able to figure out their error in time to make the switch. Carver won 26-8.
