Spotlight: Coaches' Survey

More than 140 high school football head coaches responded to Georgia High School Football Daily's questionnaire on some of the biggest issues facing their sport.

GHSF Daily's Todd Holcomb has written a series of stories based on the results of that questionnaire. The series began on Sunday in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and continues throughout state championship week. Here are portions of the fourth and fifth parts, with links to the complete stories.

Biggest changes in the sport

Year-round training. A more sophisticated passing game. College recruiting. Problems with parents and players.

There is more of all of it now, Georgia's high school football coaches said, but there's no consensus on the single biggest change in the sport since they got into the profession.

"Everything has changed," said Jefferson's T. McFerrin, whose career began as an assistant at Druid Hills in 1965. "We didn't work out in the summer when I started. Now, there are all these quarterback camps and receiver camps, speed training. I wish I'd known then what I do now, the one-back stuff, how we attack defenses. It scared us to death that somebody might come out with three wide receivers."

Diversity among coaches

Duluth football coach Corey Jarvis didn't think race would be an issue when he was one of the top coaching candidates on the market in Georgia during the offseason.

Jarvis had spent five seasons at M.L. King, a Class AAAAA school in DeKalb County. His record was 49-11. He had won a region title and sent more than 50 players into college football.

"I went on a couple of interviews outside the metro area," Jarvis said. "One guy [on a hiring committee] asked if I didn't get the head coaching job would I be a coordinator. He didn't feel like the area was ready for a black head coach. That was kind of a slap in the face. I came in with just as good a resume and presentation as anybody else had. They wouldn't ask anybody else that, would they?"

Black and white head coaches differ on whether racism is a factor in hiring, according to a survey of state high school football coaches conducted by Georgia High School Football Daily for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (147 of 405 coaches responded).

Seventy-seven percent of black head coaches said racism is a major concern that is not addressed enough in hiring and promoting. Only two of 122 white coaches surveyed believed racism was a major concern in hiring. Fifty-six percent believed racism is not a problem at all in hiring, and 49 percent said racism is a concern, but that black coaches generally get a fair shake.

Championship Trivia: Class AAA

In a story for this week's Atlanta Journal-Constitution, GHSF Daily's Todd Holcomb answered one trivia question for each of the 10 state finalists. This week in GHSF Daily, we are answering those questions again, but in greater detail, continuing today with Class AAA:

Sandy Creek

Has any school ever won consecutive state titles in two classifications?

Yes. Sandy Creek, the 2009 Class AAAA champion that dropped to AAA this season, can join Buford (2001-02) and Decatur (1949-50). Sandy Creek can become the first to move down and do it.

Carrollton

Has a head coach in Georgia ever won state titles at two schools?

Yes. Rayvan Teague, who won at Swainsboro in 2000, can become the 14th in GHSA history.

The 13 are:

Charlie Brake (1955 Morgan County, 1971 Westminster)

Gene Brodie (1975 Central Macon, 1983 Tift County)

Howard Busby (1991 Kendrick, 2001 Statesboro)

Wayman Creel (1957 Northside of Atlanta, 1970, 1972 Lakeside of Atlanta)

Jeff Herron (1999 Oconee County, 2003, 2008-09 Camden County)

Dwight Hochstetler (1980, 1984 Greenville, 1992 Bowdon)

In The News

Walnut Grove's Rainbow resigns

Walnut Grove's Harris Rainbow has resigned his head coaching position, but will remain as a teacher, after finding out in the past three months that both of his parents have cancer, The Walton Tribune has reported.

"He told me he didn't know how often he will be needed, but he wanted to be able to go when called upon," Walnut Grove principal Thomas Boutwell told the newspaper.

Walnut Grove opened in 2009 and played its first full varsity season this year and finished 1-9, winning its game against Johnson of Gainesville. Rainbow is a graduate of Wheeler High in Marietta, where his parents still live.

Woodland's Hamilton steps down

Woodland of Cartersville coach Steve Hamilton resigned this week, saying he wanted more time to spend with family, The Daily Tribune News of Cartersville reported.

Hamilton was 13-27 in four seasons and 3-7 in 2010. Hamilton, who had coached most recently in Michigan, told the newspaper that he was considering moving back to the Midwest.

Hamilton's final game was memorable. It as Woodland's first victory over Sequoyah and knocked the Chiefs out of playoff contention.

"It wasn't like we were just beating somebody at the end of the year," Hamilton told the Daily Tribune News. "This was a team playing for everying, and our kids stepped up."

Central of Carroll County fires Ledford

Central of Carroll County has fired Mike Ledford after an 0-10 finish, the Times-Georgian of Carrollton has reported.

Central was 5-6 in Ledford's first season after an 0-10 finish in 2007. Central was 0-10 in the season before Ledford arrived.

Caputo corrects vandalism report

Frank Caputo, who was let go as East Jackson's head coach earlier this month, says there was no vandalism at a rival school during football season that affected his status as coach.

The Jackson Herald Today cited sources as saying there was vandalism involving East Jackson football players at Jefferson.

Caputo said the incident involved three players taking name plates off lockers and forming the letters E and J with them.

"Our kids didn't trash a locker room, didn't stop up any commodes and didn't mess up any carpet," Caputo said. "No kids were charged with any criminal activity."

Caputo was 16-16 in his three full seasons at East Jackson, which hired him in 2007 as its first head coach. He led Salem to the Class AAAA semifinals in 2004.
