Class AAAA Playoff Preview

Each day this week, we'll look at the playoff draw for one of the five classifications, continuing today with Class AAAA. Here are five interesting facts about each of the 16 games, with an emphasis on playoff history. Which school is making its first trip to Hall County since winning a state title there 38 years ago? Find out below.

Favorite: Northside (Warner Robins)

Best draw: Clarke Central

Worst draw: Flowery Branch

Sleeper: Starr's Mill

Best first-round matchup: Southwest DeKalb at Flowery Branch

Tri-Cities (7-3) at Statesboro (8-2)

- Statesboro is a region champion for the first time since 2005, when the southeast Georgia school won a state title.

- Statesboro's head coach, Steve Pennington, is one of four in the AAAA draw that has won a Georgia state title. The others are Tucker's Franklin Stephens, Marist's Alan Chadwick and Southwest DeKalb's Buck Godfrey.

- Tri-Cities, located in East Point, has improved its record each of the past three seasons under coach Kenneth Miller - from 1-9 to 4-6 to 5-5 to 7-3. Miller is a Tri-Cities alumnus.

- Tri-Cities' last winning season was 2005 (6-5). The school is 0-3 all-time in the playoffs.

- These schools have never met in football, but Tri-Cities is no stranger to South Georgia. The Bulldogs have played at Colquitt County (2005) and Lowndes (2004, 2005) but without winning.

Lee County (7-3) at Griffin (9-1)

- Lee County quarterback Justin Walker set a state record for passing yards in a game, 591, in a 48-35 loss to Warner Robins last week.

- Lee County will have a winning season for the second time since 2000 and first since 2005, when the Trojans lost to Griffin 49-21 in the second round of the AAAA playoffs. That is the only prior meeting in football between the schools.

- Griffin is the only school that has been in the AAAA semifinals each of the past two seasons.

- Griffin is 21-7 in home playoff games all-time.

- Griffin coach Steven Devoursney, who is 94-29 in 10 seasons, won a state title as a player at R.E. Lee in 1988.

South Forsyth (6-4) at Kell (10-0)

- South Forsyth's five-win improvement from a 1-9 finish in 2009 is the largest of its kind among AAAA playoff teams. It is South Forsyth's first winning season since 2003.

- South Forsyth's Jeff Arnette is one of four head coaches who are new to their schools in the AAAA draw. The others are Franco Perkins of Rome, Kevin Kinsler of Northside of Warner Robins and Chad Phillips of Starr's Mill.

- This is Kell's first 10-win in the Cobb County school's eight-year history.

- This is Kell's first home playoff game in history. Kell is 1-2 in the playoffs.

- These schools have never met in football.

SW DeKalb (8-2) at Flowery Branch (9-1)

- Flowery Branch is seeking its fifth 10-win season in six years.

- Flowery Branch has reached the semifinals each of the past two seasons, playing eight playoff games on the road and one (the 2008 Class AAA final) in the Georgia Dome. The school's last home playoff game was a first-round loss to Chamblee, 47-34 in 2007.

- Southwest DeKalb is 47-30 all-time in the postseason.

- This will be Southwest DeKalb's first trip to Hall County since defeating Gainesville 16-12 in the 1972 Class AA championship game. Southwest DeKalb's coach then was Dewey Alverson.

- These schools have never met in football.

Glynn Academy (7-3) at Lovejoy (10-0)

- Glynn Academy is seeking its first state playoff victory since 1968 (beat Laney 13-6 in Class AAA quarterfinals) and first postseason win since 1985 (beat Effingham County 32-14 in region semifinals).

- A victory would give Glynn Academy its first eight-win season since a 9-2 finish in 1998.

- Lovejoy is region champion for the first time since 2004 and 10-0 for the first time since 2003.

- Lovejoy is 5-3 all-time in first-round playoff games but has never advanced past the second round.

- These schools have never met in football.

Dutchtown (9-1) at Thomas Co. Cent. (8-2)

- Dutchtown, a seven-year-old school in Henry County, is 9-1 and in the playoffs for the first time.

- Dutchtown has improved its record in each of coach Jason Galt's four seasons - from 1-9 to 2-8 to 5-5 to 7-3 to 9-1.

- Thomas County Central is 37-8 all-time in home playoff games, a record that included a 27-game home winning streak from 1987 to 2006.

- Thomas County Central's 54 victories all-time in the postseason are second to Marist's 74 for the most among schools in the AAAA draw.

- Thomas County Central defeated Dutchtown in regular-season games in 2006 (39-0) and 2007 (55-0), both times in Thomasville.

Pope (7-3) at Chattahoochee (10-0)

- Pope is making its first playoff appearance since 2000. Pope's best finish is the round of 16 in 1994 and 2000.

- Pope has improved in each of coach Matt Kemper's three seasons - from 1-9 to 4-6 to 6-4 to 7-3.

- Chattahoochee is playing its first home playoff game since 2003 and first playoff game anywhere since 2007. Its last playoff victory was a 20-19 win over Tri-Cities in 2003.

- Chattahoochee is 10-0 for the second time in history. The school's 2001 team went 11-1.

- Chattahoochee and Pope are 3-3 in their series. Pope won the last meeting 49-7 in 2003. They've never played each other in the playoffs.

Heritage-Conyers (7-3) at Marist (8-2)

- Marist has won 27 consecutive home playoff games. Its last home playoff loss came in 1994 to Tucker 20-10 in the Class AAA quarterfinals.

- If Marist fails to advance two rounds, it will mark the first time that this DeKalb County private school has failed to have 10 wins in consecutive seasons since 1985-86, Alan Chadwick's first two seasons as head coach.

- Heritage won four of its last five regular-season games - getting two victories in overtime - to make the playoffs. Other teams to win two overtime games this season are Johnson County, Montgomery County, Swainsboro and Union Grove.

- This will be Heritage's first playoff appearance since 2004. Heritage has never won a playoff game on the road in its 35 years of existence.

- This is the first meeting in football between the schools.

Loganville (7-3) at Tucker (10-0)

- Both of these schools were eliminated by eventual champion Sandy Creek in the 2009 AAAA playoffs. Loganville lost 37-19 in the first round, and Tucker lost 17-14 in the second.

- Tucker has won six straight home playoff games, and Loganville has never won a road playoff game.

- Tucker is a region champion (6-AAAA) and 10-0 for the sixth time in 10 seasons. Tucker has never won a state title when it went 10-0 but won in 2008 after a 9-1 regular season.

- Loganville has advanced in the playoffs only once, in 1991, when it reached the quarterfinals.

- Loganville is 22-10 over the past three seasons. Its only other comparable three-season stretch in history (dating to 1964) was a 23-11 run from 1989 to 1991.

Hiram (8-2) at Lambert (8-2)

- Hiram, an 11-year-old school in Paulding County, won its first playoff game in 2009, a 28-20 victory over Chamblee, but was upset in the second round by Rockdale County 21-7 and finished 11-1.

- Hiram's coach is Andy Dorsey, son of retired McEachern coach Jimmy Dorsey, who won more than 200 games.

- Lambert's coach is Sid Maxwell, who helped start Sequoyah's program in the 1990s. One of Lambert's two losses this season was against Sequoyah.

- Lambert is a two-year-old school playing its first full region and varsity schedule. It was 4-0 last season against other first-year programs and filled the rest of its schedule with JV teams.

- Lambert is one of two Forsyth County schools built in the past five years. The other, West Forsyth, also is in the playoffs for the first time this year, as are more established South Forsyth and North Forsyth. Only Forsyth Central among county schools failed to make the postseason.

Whitewater (8-2) at Northside-W.R. (10-0)

- Northside's coach, Kevin Kinsler, replaced longtime coach Conrad Nix, who retired after 300 career victories. Kinsler is a Northside alumnus who had been Nix's defensive coordinator for years.

- Northside is 29-4 in playoff games at its home field. One of the losses was to Warner Robins on what amounted to a neutral site.

- Whitewater, a seven-year-old school in Fayette County, has made the playoffs in four of its five seasons of playing a region schedule but won only one playoff game, a 23-21 victory over Lovejoy in the 2007 first round.

- Whitewater's head coach is Amos McCrary, who helped build Creekside into a contender from 1994 to 2003.

- This is the first meeting between these schools in football.

Ware County (8-2) at North Clayton (9-1)

- North Clayton is one victory from its third consecutive 10-win season, which would be a first for a Clayton County school. Those represent Rodney Hackney's three seasons as head coach at North Clayton.

- The 2009 run to the quarterfinals was North Clayton's best finish since 1997. North Clayton played in Class AA finals in 1962 and 1963, losing both.

- Ware County has been coached the past two years by Ed Dudley, who led Walton of Marietta to Class AAAAA semifinals in 2004 and 2007.

- Ware County's most memorable game was a loss - 3-0 against Lowndes of Class AAAAA. Ware also defeated AAAAA playoff team Coffee 31-14.

- This is the first meeting between these schools in football.

Mays (7-3) at Clarke Central (10-0)

- Clarke Central is 10-0 for the first time since 1986.

- Clarke Central is 51-25 all-time in the postseason (not including the history of Athens High) but had not won a playoff game since 1997 until reaching the Class AAAA final in 2009.

- If Clarke makes the semifinals, it will have succeeded in improving its victory total in each of coach Leroy Ryals' five seasons - from 4-6 to 6-5 to 7-3-1 to 9-2 to 12-3 to 13-?.

- This is a rematch of a first-round game of 2009. Clarke won 31-28.

- Mays is 0-7 all-time in road playoff games.

Rome (6-4) at East Paulding (8-2)

- Rome's new head coach is Franco Perkins, an alumnus of the school who had been an assistant for 13 years.

- Rome has made seven quarterfinals since 1997 and broke through to the semifinals for the first time in 2008.

- East Paulding made its first state semifinal in 2006. The Raiders lost to Marist 27-7.

- East Paulding is 47-12 in five seasons under John Reid. The school was 38-119-1 before he arrived.

- East Paulding beat Rome 25-22 in a non-region regular-season game in 2009. Rome leads the series between the two 5-4.

Hardaway (5-5) at Starr's Mill (10-0)

- This is Hardaway's first playoff appearance since 1999. Hardaway's last playoff victory came in 1998. Hardaway's record in the postseason is 2-9.

- Hardaway's coach, Jeff Battles, played at Columbus State and coached at Pacelli, a Columbus private school, before taking the Hardaway job in 2007.

- Starr's Mill's coach, Chad Phillips, was promoted from offensive coordinator this year when Mike Earwood left for Our Lady of Mercy. The two had worked together since the 1991 Cartersville state championship team.

- This is Starr's Mill's first region title since 2005 and first 10-0 finish since 2000.

Creekside (8-2) at Brunswick (7-3)

- Brunswick's most memorable game was a loss - 64-62 to Valdosta. Brunswick quarterback Chris Anderson had 555 yards in total offense - 359 passing and 196 rushing.

- Brunswick was denied its third straight region title (2-AAAA) in the final game of the regular season, a 20-14 loss to Statesboro in overtime.

- Creekside started 8-0, getting one victory by forfeit, and lost its final two games to region champion Lovejoy and North Clayton.

- Creekside's eight wins are the most for the south Fulton County school since a 12-1 finish in 2006 when the team had Eric Berry as its quarterback.

- This will be Creekside's second trip to the Georgia coast for a football game. Creekside lost to Camden County 49-0 in the 2008 first round of AAAAA. Creekside and Brunswick have never met in football.

Corrections

Alpharetta's record against Gwinnett County teams all-time is 2-2. We had the record incorrect Monday. ... The score of last week's Treutlen-Metter game in Monday's edition incorrectly showed that Treutlen won.
