Class AAAAAA Playoff Preview

Each day this week, we'll look at the playoff draw for one of the five classifications above Class A, starting today with Class AAAAAA. Here are five interesting facts about each of the 16 games, with an emphasis on playoff history. One quarter of the draw contains four of the top seven teams in the AJC's AAAAAA rankings. Find out which one below.

Favorite: Grayson

Best draw: Camden County

Worst draw: North Gwinnett

Sleeper: McEachern

Best first-round matchup: Colquitt County at McEachern

Tri-Cities (4-6) at Lovejoy (9-1)

- Lovejoy ranks No. 1 in scoring offense (44.0) and scoring defense (6.0) in Class AAAAAA against a schedule that ranks 61st out of 63 teams. Tri-Cities ranks 39th in scoring offense (20.5) and 31st in scoring defense (23.4) against a schedule that ranks 43rd.

- Lovejoy reached the Class AAAA championship game in 2011 and lost to Tucker 22-7. Lovejoy had been to the playoffs nine previous times without advancing past the second round.

- Tri-Cities reached the Class AAAA quarterfinals in 2011 and lost to Northside of Warner Robins 36-8. Tri-Cities had been in the playoffs four previous times, losing in the first round of each (2002, 2003, 2005, 2010).

- Lovejoy and Tri-Cities have played four previous times, each while sharing a region. Lovejoy is 4-0 in the series, including a 24-20 victory in 2011.

- No Clayton County public school has won a state championship since Lovejoy opened in 1990. Morrow was the last in 1987. No south Fulton County public school has a state championship since Tri-Cities opened in 1988. The last was Palmetto in 1983.

Marietta (7-3) at Lowndes (9-1)

- Lowndes is 42-18 all-time in the postseason and won state titles in 1980, 1999, 2004, 2005 and 2007.

- Marietta won a Class AAA championship in 1967 and is 30-27 all-time in postseason games dating to its first one in 1948. Marietta's victory over Centennial in the 2011 first round was the Blue Devils' first playoff victory since 2005. Marietta is 3-8 in the state playoffs since 1999.

- Lowndes is 17-1 in the playoffs at home under coach Randy McPherson but lost its most recent home playoff game to Collins Hill 31-28 in overtime in 2010.

- Lowndes is 13th in scoring offense (34.2) and fifth in scoring defense (11.9) in Class AAAAAA against a schedule that ranks 49th. Marietta is eighth in scoring offense (37.6) and 28th in scoring defense (23) against a schedule that ranks 47th.

- These schools have never played each other.

Wheeler (6-4) at Grayson (9-1)

- Grayson is the highest of four Top 10 teams in its quarter of the draw. It includes No. 3 Grayson, No. 4 North Gwinnett, No. 6 Lowndes and No. 7 Lovejoy.

- Grayson is the only school that has reached the quarterfinals in the highest classification each of the past five seasons. Grayson, which opened in 2000, won the Class AAAAA title in 2011.

- Wheeler, which opened in 1965, is playing in its first playoff game since 2006. Wheeler's last playoff victory came in 1997 (Douglass). Wheeler's last playoff victory on the road was in a region playoff in 1993 (Marietta). Wheeler's last state-playoff victory on the road was in 1990 (McEachern). Wheeler's last state-playoff victory played outside of Cobb County was in 1974 (Northside of Atlanta).

- Grayson is second in scoring offense (40.8) and third in scoring defense (8.4) in Class AAAAAA against a schedule that ranks 14th. Wheeler is 35th in scoring offense (21.5) and 20th in scoring defense (18.9) against a schedule that ranks 25th.

- These schools have never played each other.

Johns Creek (8-2) at North Gwinnett (9-1)

- Johns Creek, which opened in 2009, has played in one playoff game and lost to Flowery Branch 41-38 in the Class AAAA first round of 2011.

- North Gwinnett, which opened in 1961, had played only one playoff game (1964) until 1996. The school has reached the playoffs each of the past nine seasons and got as far as the championship game in 2007. North Gwinnett is 6-0 in first-round playoff games under coach Bob Sphire, who is 76-12 overall in his six seasons.

- North Gwinnett needs a victory to earn its seventh consecutive 10-win season. Only four other Georgia programs have achieved that in the highest classification. They are Camden County (2001-12), Parkview (1999-2005), Valdosta (1986-92) and Warner Robins (1979-85).

- North Gwinnett is ranked 11th in scoring offense (36.4) and 15th in scoring defense (17.8) in Class AAAAAA against a schedule that ranks 44th. Johns Creek is 18th in scoring offense (30.9) and 17th in scoring defense (18.0) against a schedule that ranks 24th.

- These schools have never played each other.

Rockdale County (3-7) at Hughes (9-1)

- Hughes, a 4-year-old school that won its first region title this season after three losing seasons, has beaten more state-playoff teams than any other AAAAAA team. The 6-1 record includes victories over one AAAAA team, Creekside.

- Rockdale County's Venson Elder is the only first-year coach among 14 in AAAAAA to lead his team to the playoffs. Rockdale is in the playoffs for the first time since its run to the Class AAAA semifinals in 2009, when Rockdale won three playoff games on the road. Rockdale County is making its fifth appearance in the state playoffs.

- Hughes has the best draw of any team in Class AAAAAA, according to the Maxwell Ratings. Rockdale County is a 304 billion-to-1 long shot to win the title, per Maxwell.

- Rockdale County is 62nd out of 63 teams in scoring offense (7.6) and 37th in scoring defense (25.1) against a schedule that ranks 59th. Hughes is 28th in scoring offense (24.4) and fourth in scoring defense (9.2) against a schedule that ranks 56th.

- Hughes beat Rockdale County 28-0 on Sept. 21. This is the only rematch of a regular-season game in the first round of AAAAAA. They also have two common opponents. Hughes beat Luella 27-7 and Newton 10-0. Rockdale beat Luella 21-20 and lost to Newton 27-6.

Valdosta (7-3) at North Cobb (8-2)

- Valdosta is 87-24-2 in the state playoffs since 1948 while winning 21 of the school's state-record 23 state championships. The GHSA began statewide playoffs in all classes that year.

- North Cobb has lost 12 consecutive postseason games, last winning in 1979 against Dade in the Class C semifinals.

- Valdosta has come to Cobb County twice for playoff games, losing to Walton 17-14 in 2004 and beating McEachern 31-28 in 2010.

- Valdosta is 17th in scoring offense (31.3) and 13th in scoring defense (17.7) against a schedule that ranks 13th. North Cobb is third in scoring offense (40.6) and ninth in scoring defense (16.3) against a schedule that ranks 51st.

- These schools have never played each other.

Brookwood (6-4) at Lassiter (10-0)

- Lassiter is ranked No. 1 this week for the first time in the school's history, which dates to 1982. Before 2009, Lassiter had never been ranked in the top 10 of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll.

- Lassiter is 6-7 all-time in the playoffs with a best finish of the Class AAAAA semifinals in 2011. Brookwood is 36-17 all-time in playoff games with state championships in 1996 and 2010.

- Lassiter is 5-0 against playoffs teams. That includes wins over Lassiter's three Region 5 rivals plus Hillgrove and Kell. Only Norcross matches Lassiter's 5-0 record against playoff teams.

- Brookwood is 21st in scoring offense (29.8) and 42nd in scoring defense (26.9) in Class AAAAAA against a schedule that ranks fourth. Lassiter is 10th in scoring offense (36.7) and eighth in scoring defense (14.7) against a schedule that ranks 26th.

- These schools have met once before. Lassiter defeated Brookwood 14-6 in the 2011 Corky Kell Classic. It was viewed as a major upset at the time. Brookwood was defending its Class AAAAA title, and Lassiter was coming off a 5-6 finish. Lassiter and Brookwood also have a common opponent in Walton. Lassiter beat Walton 21-9. Walton beat Brookwood 35-24.

Mill Creek (7-3) at Alpharetta (7-3)

- Both schools opened in 2004. No first-round game has two younger schools, but there are four schools that are younger that made the AAAAAA playoffs. They are Alcovy (2006), Hillgrove (2006), Johns Creek (2009) and West Forsyth (2007).

- Mill Creek has made the playoffs twice before, losing in the first round at Harrison in 2007 and advancing to the quarterfinals in 2010 before falling to Colquitt County. Mill Creek will be playing its fifth playoff game on the road.

- This will be the third playoff game all-time for Alpharetta, which lost to eventual champion Brookwood in 2010 and Lassiter 17-16 in overtime in 2011.

- Mill Creek is ninth in scoring offense (37.1) and 14th in scoring defense (17.8) against a schedule that ranks 39th. Alpharetta is 14th in scoring offense (34.0) and 38th in scoring defense (25.2) against a schedule that ranks 19th.

- Mill Creek leads the series between these schools 3-1 and won their last meeting 42-7 in 2011. But Alpharetta went on to win a region title while Mill Creek failed to make the playoffs at 5-5.

Hillgrove (6-4) at Camden County (9-1)

- Hillgrove defeated Camden County 28-26 in the 2010 second round at Camden in one of the biggest upsets in state history. Camden was the two-time defending of Class AAAAA and ranked No. 1 at the time.

- This is Hillgrove's fourth trip to the playoffs in five seasons. Hillgrove's best finish was to the 2010 quarterfinals, where the Hawks were beaten by eventual champion Brookwood.

- Camden County is a No. 1 seed in the state playoffs for the 12th consecutive season. That is the longest streak ever in the highest classification.

- Camden County has won 10 straight first-round games, all at home. The last loss came to Riverdale 24-21 in 2001. Camden enters the playoffs with a loss in its final game for the first time since 1995. Camden lost to Colquitt County 13-12 last week and fell from the No. 1 ranking.

- Hillgrove is 20th in scoring offense (30.4) and 22nd in scoring defense (19.3) in AAAAAA against a schedule that ranks 48th. Camden County is fourth in scoring offense (40.5) and second in scoring defense (6.5) against a schedule that ranks 30th.

East Coweta (4-6) at Newton (5-5)

- Newton is playing its first home playoff game since 1987, a 27-24 victory over Brookwood in the Region 8-AAAA final. Newton has never hosted a state playoff game.

- East Coweta's streak of 16 seasons of making the state playoffs is the second-longest of any Class AAAAAA school behind Camden County's 22. East Coweta (4-6) is at risk of its first losing season since 1987 (2-8). To keep the streak going, East Coweta would need to win its first road playoff game since 2002.

- East Coweta and Newton have two common opponents. Region 2 champion Lovejoy beat East Coweta 30-7 and Newton 51-6. Region 3 champion Hughes beat East Coweta 28-14 and Newton 10-0.

- East Coweta is 36th in scoring offense (21.3) and 30th in scoring defense (23.2) against a schedule that ranks 34th. Newton is 54th in scoring offense (14.7) and 21st in scoring defense (19.2) against a schedule that ranks 57th.

- These schools were in the same region in 2010 and 2011. East Coweta won their games 20-14 and 23-8. Those are the only times the schools have played each other.

Chattahoochee (7-3) at Norcross (10-0)

- Norcross is the only team that has beaten five AAAAAA playoff teams. Norcross has beaten North Gwinnett, Mill Creek and Collins Hill in Region 7 and South Gwinnett and Parkview in non-region play. All were by victory margins of 10 points or more.

- Norcross has reached the playoffs seven of the past eight seasons with a best finish of the quarterfinals in 2006.

- Chattahoochee has lost its last five playoff games against Gwinnett County teams. The last victory was against Collins Hill on the way to the Class AAAA semifinals in 1999.

- Chattahoochee is 19th in scoring offense (30.7) and 12th in scoring defense (17.6) against a schedule that ranks 36th. Norcross is fifth in scoring offense (40.1) and sixth in scoring defense (12.7) in AAAAAA against a schedule that ranks 27th.

- Norcross leads the series between the schools 4-2. Norcross won the most recent meeting 20-17 in 2009. The next season, Chattahoochee moved down to Class AAAA and won a state championship.

Milton (7-3) at South Gwinnett (8-2)

- Milton is 0-5 in the state playoffs, with losses in 1952, 1996, 1999, 2008 and 2011. Milton made region playoffs five other seasons and did win a subregion final in 1953 against Lithonia.

- South Gwinnett is 12-11 all-time in the postseason with a best finish in 1993, when the Comets reached the 1993 Class AAAA final, losing to Dunwoody.

- South Gwinnett is 7-2 in the first round of the state playoffs and 4-0 at home.

- Milton is 12th in scoring offense (36.2) and 29th in scoring defense (23.2) against a schedule that ranks 17th. South Gwinnett is 16th in scoring offense (33.3) and 27th in scoring defense (22.6) against a schedule that ranks ninth.

- Both schools date to the 1950s. They've played each other six times, all between 1966 and 1971, when they were members of the same Class A region. South Gwinnett leads the series 4-1-1.

Colquitt County (7-3) at McEachern (8-2)

- McEachern enters the playoffs unranked by GHSF Daily and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, which might be a good thing. In 2009, the Indians were 10-0 and ranked No. 6 and lost to Brookwood 20-10 in the first round. In 2010, they were 10-1 and ranked No. 4 and lost to Valdosta 31-28 in the second round. In 2011, they were 10-1 and ranked No. 6 and lost to Lassiter 20-17 in the second round.

- Colquitt County is 8-2 in road playoff games over the past three seasons. No other school has won more playoff road games in that time. The victories include trips to Grayson, Camden County, North Gwinnett, Lassiter and DeKalb County's Hallford Stadium for wins over Stephenson and M.L. King.

- Colquitt County's most recent trip to Cobb County for the playoffs came in 1991, when Colquitt defeated Eric Zeier-led Marietta 21-17 in the Class AAAA semifinals.

- Colquitt County is 24th in scoring offense (27.9) and 10th in scoring defense (16.5) against schedule that ranks first. McEachern is seventh in scoring offense (37.9) and 32nd in scoring defense (23.5) against a schedule that ranks 35th.

- These schools have played each other twice, both times in the Georgia Dome. Colquitt County won 28-7 in the 1996 Corky Kell Classic. McEachern won 35-14 in the 1998 Class AAAAA semifinals.

Alcovy (4-6) at Newnan (8-2)

- Alcovy is one of seven teams that made the AAAAAA playoffs after moving to the highest classification this season. The others are Chattahoochee, Rockdale County, Hughes, Johns Creek, Tri-Cities and Lovejoy. Two (Lovejoy, Hughes) won regions. Three (Alcovy, Rockdale, Tri-Cities) have losing records.

- Newnan has won five consecutive first-round playoff games, including an upset of Region 1-AAAAA champion Valdosta 17-7 last season.

- Alcovy has made two previous playoff appearances and lost to Thomas County Central in 2009 and Tri-Cities in 2011.

- Alcovy is 52nd in scoring offense (16.6) and 25th in scoring defense (21.3) in Class AAAAAA against a schedule that ranks 60th. Newnan is 30th in scoring offense (24.2) and 16th in scoring defense (17.9) against a schedule that ranks 44th.

- These schools have never played each other.

Collins Hill (6-4) at West Forsyth (9-1)

- Collins Hill has lost 10 straight games to state-playoff qualifiers since the 2010 team upset Lowndes in Valdosta and reached the Class AAAAA final.

- West Forsyth has reached the playoffs three times in its short history and been eliminated by Gwinnett County teams (South Gwinnett, Grayson) each previous time. Collins Hill is a Gwinnett team.

- The Wolverines made the AAAAA quarterfinals last season and beat Region 4 champion Hillgrove in a second-round upset.

- Collins Hill is 15th in scoring offense (33.5) and 11th in scoring defense (16.6) against a schedule that ranks 40th. West Forsyth is sixth in scoring offense (39.5) and 18th in scoring defense (18.4) against a schedule that ranks 29th.

- These schools have never played each other.

Parkview (7-3) at Walton (7-3)

- Parkview has lost its last five playoff games after a 39-7 run starting in 1993, when Cecil Flowe was hired. The run spanned state titles in 1997, 2000, 2001 and 2002.

- Walton has been eliminated from the playoffs by a Gwinnett County team in eight of its last 11 playoff appearances. Parkview was one in 2004, winning in the Class AAAAA semifinals.

- Parkview and Walton have a common opponent in Brookwood. Parkview won 21-14. Walton won 35-24.

- Parkview and Walton have played twice, both in the playoffs. Parkview beat Walton 28-0 in the 2004 Class AAAAA semifinals. Walton beat Parkview 31-20 in the 2007 first round.

- Parkview is 40th in scoring offense (19.9) and seventh in scoring defense (13.3) against a schedule that ranks eighth. Walton is 32nd in scoring offense (23.9) and 26th in scoring defense (21.7) against a schedule that ranks seventh.
