Saye It Ain't So

GHSF Daily's Chip Saye ranks the surprises and games of note from the weekend:

1. Mount Zion 20, Darlington 17: Mount Zion of Carroll County moved into first place in 6-A Division A with a shocker against three-time defending region champion Darlington. The Eagles improved to 5-3 overall and can win the subregion title with a victory against Gordon Lee on Friday. Mount Zion was 0-10 in 2011 and outscored by an average of 48-9.

2. Central Gwinnett 30, Parkview 27: Parkview, which was ranked No. 6 in Class AAAAAA last week, fell into a four-way tie for first place in AAAAAA with a three-overtime loss to a Central Gwinnett team that had won just one of its first five region games. Parkview remains in the driver's seat and can win the region title with victories in its final two games.

3. Chattahoochee 29, West Forsyth 28: West Forsyth, which was ranked No. 5 in Class AAAAAA last week, fell into a three-way tie for first place in 6-AAAAAA after suffering its first loss of the season. West Forsyth is tied with Johns Creek and Alpharetta. Chattahoochee, tied for fourth place with Centennial, gave its playoff hopes a big boost.

4. Valdosta 38, Colquitt County 36: Valdosta came into the game in fifth place in 1-AAAAAA but has put itself in position to claim the No. 3 seed if it wins its final two games against Brunswick and Coffee. Colquitt County, which was alone in third place, most likely needs to beat Coffee this week to have any realistic shot of reaching the playoffs.

5. River Ridge 24, Gilmer 21: River Ridge, a fourth-year program in Woodstock playing a region schedule for the first time, moved into sole possession of first place in 7-AAAA Division A. The Knights can clinch the subregion title with a victory on Friday at Pickens. River Ridge has won three consecutive games, all in subregion play, after a 1-4 start.

6. East Paulding 20, South Paulding 16: Third-ranked East Paulding (8-0) had by far its closest call of its 8-0 season with a four-point victory over the Spartans. The Raiders had four shutouts in their first seven games, winning each by at least 21 points. East Paulding was considered a 24-point favorite by the computer Maxwell Ratings.

7. Harris County 35, Lee County 31: Harris County has won four consecutive games after an 0-4 start and put itself in position to challenge for the 1-AAAAA championship. Esaias Chapman rushed for 274 yards on 33 carries. The Tigers are 3-0 in region play, half a game behind Thomas County Central, and their game on Nov. 9 will decide the region title. Lee County has lost two straight after a 6-0 start.

8. Woodward Academy 20, St. Pius 14: Woodward Academy kept its hopes of winning the 6-AAA championship alive with a victory against a St. Pius team that was ranked No. 5 in Class AAA last week. Woodward can win the title if it beats Cedar Grove this week and Blessed Trinity loses its final two games against St. Pius and Cedar Grove.

9. Winder-Barrow 31, Cedar Shoals 21: Winder-Barrow ended a 31-game losing streak, the longest active slump of any Class AAAAA team. The Bulldoggs had not won since beating Monroe Area 48-41 on Oct. 9, 2009. Cedar Shoals, which has lost five of its last six games after a 2-0 start, was a 24-point favorite by the Maxwell Ratings.

10. Cambridge 45, North Springs 13: Cambridge, a first-year school in Milton which had been outscored by an average of 44-9 during its 0-7 start, picked up the first victory in the program's brief history. It was the 31st consecutive loss for North Springs, which hasn't won a game since a 39-6 loss to Stone Mountain on Oct. 16, 2009, was overturned by forfeit.
