Buford forfeits two wins, falls to 4-3

Buford forfeited victories over Banks County and West Hall on Monday for the use of an ineligible player, the GHSA announced.

The player, who was not named, did not have the required units of credit to be eligible academically. Buford reported the incident to the GHSA.

Buford's record falls to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in Region 7-AAA. The forfeits put North Hall (6-1, 4-0) in the lead in 7-AAA and put five teams with 2-2 records: Buford, Dawson County, White County, Banks County and West Hall.

If North Hall loses no more than one game, North Hall will win the region. Buford has won region titles in 10 of the past 11 seasons, failing only in 2009, when the Wolves still won a Class AA state title.

The forfeits now represent 25 percent of the games lost by Buford since Jess Simpson became coach in 2005. Simpson's record, formerly 102-6, is now 100-8.

Forfeits

The number of victories overturned by forfeits by the GHSA since 2000 is highly erratic. In 2008, only one school, Montgomery County, was flagged. There were 25 games forfeited in 2002 alone, involving five schools - Crim (1), Dunwoody (6), Riverdale (8), Southwest (6) and Wheeler (4). Common reasons are using players that are not on track to graduate or who are not living in their school district legally. Student-athletes also may violate age and semester rules. He or she must be 19 no sooner than May 1 and must have begun high school no sooner than the fall of 2009. The violations are typically administrative errors that are reported by the offending schools.

Trivia

Buford has failed to win a region title just once since 2001. That came in 2009. Which team won Buford's region in 2009? (Answer Wednesday)

Answer to Monday's question: Former Atlanta Brave Marquis Grissom was the quarterback for Lakeshore's region championship team in 1985.

Answer to Friday's question: The five schools named Wildcats that have won GHSA state titles since 1948 are Camden County (3), Dunwoody (1), Valdosta (21), Villa Rica (1) and Westminster (2). Note that Valdosta won two state titles before 1948. Also, the Laney Wildcats won two state titles in the 1960s before joining the GHSA.
