Saye It Ain't So

GHSF Daily's Chip Saye ranks the surprises and games of note from the weekend:

1. Pinecrest Academy 29, George Walton 10: Pinecrest Academy of Cumming picked up what was easily the school's biggest victory since moving from the GISA to the GHSA in 2010. Pinecrest is one of four teams with one loss in Region 8-A play chasing region leader Athens Academy, which is undefeated.

2. Miller Grove 32, Stephenson 29: Miller Grove proved its 5-1 start was no fluke with a victory in the first meeting between these DeKalb County rivals. The Wolverines are in the thick of the Region 6-AAAAA playoff race, tied with Stephenson and Tucker for second place, a game behind M.L. King. Stephenson was ranked No. 3 last week.

3. Telfair County 43, Turner County 24: Region 2-A has provided a surprise just about every week, and this was no different as Telfair County picked up its first region victory against a Turner County team that was 5-1 two weeks ago. According to the computer Maxwell Ratings, the victories by Pinecrest Academy, Miller Grove and Telfair were three of the four biggest surprises of the season, behind only Jefferson's early season loss to Commerce.

4. Fayette County 38, LaGrange 35: Fayette County picked up its second consecutive victory in the series, although this was the first meeting since 1999. Fayette County is just 2-5 overall this season but has won two straight and is tied for fourth place in Region 5-AAAA with Troup, which the Tigers play in an important game this week.

5. McIntosh 30, Starr's Mill 13: McIntosh has five victories for the first time since 1995 after beating Fayette County rival Starr's Mill for the first time in the program's 31-year history. Starr's Mill won all 10 of the previous meetings in the series by at least 19 points, including 35-0 last year. The Chiefs are in the hunt for a playoff berth in Region 4-AAAAA.

6. Hughes 34, Newnan 14: Hughes, the fourth-year program from Fairburn, clinched the first winning season in school history and established itself as the team to beat in Region 3-AAAAAA. A victory this week against East Coweta would leave the Panthers needing just one win in their final two games to clinch their first region title.

7. Greene County 37, Union County 19: Greene County has recovered from an 0-4 start to put itself in the playoff race in Region 8-AA. The Tigers are 2-2 in the region and tied for third place with Union County, Oglethorpe County and Rabun. Greene County plays Oglethorpe and Rabun in the next two weeks and could still finish as high as the No. 3 seed.

8. Wilkinson County 42, Aquinas 14: It turns out the Wilkinson County, not Aquinas, is the top challenger to Lincoln County in Region 7-A. Wilkinson County knocked Aquinas (previously No. 6) out of the top 10 and moved into the rankings at No. 9. Wilkinson, which is 8-1 all-time against Aquinas, meets fifth-ranked Lincoln County on Nov. 2.

9. River Ridge 35, Cass 14: River Ridge, a fourth-year program in Woodstock, began the year 1-4 in non-subregion play, but the Knights now control their playoff destiny after winning their second consecutive game in Region 7-AAAA Division A. Victories over Gilmer and Pickens the next two weeks would make River Ridge the subregion champion.

10. Eagle's Landing 30, Woodland-Stockbridge 28: Eagle's Landing broke a 16-game losing streak with its Region 4-AAAA Division A win. The Golden Eagles had not won since a 34-27 victory against Rutland in the first game of the 2011 season. They are 3-35 since the end of the 2008 season, when they made their last trip to the playoffs.
