Saye It Ain't So

GHSF Daily's Chip Saye ranks the most surprising and notable results of the weekend:

1. Brooks County 28, Valdosta 24: Class AA No. 2 Brooks County picked up its first victory in seven meetings with Valdosta, which was No. 9 in Class AAAAA last week but has dropped out of the top 10. Brooks County has won six of 28 all-time games against the seven current members of Region 1-AAAAAA.

2. Gainesville 19, Buford 15: Any Buford loss is noteworthy. This one was just the third for the Wolves in the regular season since the start of the 2005 season, and it was Buford's first in five all-time meetings with Gainesville. Going back to last year's Class AA championship game, it was the Wolves' second loss in three games, a "slump" that hasn't happened to them since the final three games of 1999.

3. Washington-Wilkes 21, Lincoln County 6: Washington-Wilkes had won just once in the previous 10 meetings with rival Lincoln County and had lost five consecutive games in the series. The Tigers' victory was their 14th all time in the series, the most by any Lincoln County opponent. Counting the schools' histories as Lincolnton and Washington high schools, the series stands at 36-33-6, with Lincoln County/Lincolnton in the lead.

4. Lakeside, Atlanta 28, Dunwoody 14: Lakeside ended a 17-game losing streak, picking up its first victory since a 7-6 win over Redan on Sept. 17, 2010. Nick Alexander threw two touchdown passes and Bradley Earnest rushed for two scores for the Vikings, who are 1-1 in coach Mike Rozier's first season.

5. North Murray 57, Dade County 44: North Murray was 3-21 in its first three seasons of varsity football, but the Mountaineers are 2-0 this season after winning a shootout with Dade County. The 57 points broke the school single-game record, set in a 40-33 victory over River Ridge in the final game of the school's inaugural season of 2009.

6. Wheeler 33, Pope 0: The Wildcats are 2-0 for the first time since 1997, when they finished 10-2 and lost to eventual state champion Parkview 20-14 in the second round of the Class AAAA (the highest at the time) playoffs. Pope was 10-2 in 2011 but has been outscored 60-7 in its two games this season.

7. Morrow 12, Forest Park 6: Morrow broke an 11-game losing streak, winning for the first time since it beat Forest Park 14-0 in the final game of the 2010 season. Forest Park also has just one victory in that same stretch, beating Morrow 34-6 in the 2011 season-finale.

8. Cedar Shoals 35, Elbert County 28: The Class AAAAA Jaguars are 2-0 for the first time since 2007 after beating Elbert County, which was ranked No. 7 in AAA last week but fell out of the top 10 after dropping to 0-2. Adrian Washington scored the winning touchdown with 1:01 remaining.

9. Dooly County 21, Americus-Sumter 12: Dooly County, which escaped with a one-point, overtime victory over Class AA Macon County in its opener, surprised Class AAAA Americus-Sumter to improve to 2-0 for the first time since 2007.

10. Hancock Central 26, East Laurens 21: Hancock Central is 2-0 for the first time since 2007, beating a Class AA school that had routed AAAA Howard in its previous game and been competitive with Class A No. 5 Aquinas in its opening game.
