Saye It Ain't So

GHSF Daily's Chip Saye ranks the most surprising results of the weekend:

1. Dodge County 61, Dublin 7: Dublin was ranked No. 6 in Class AA, so its loss alone was enough to qualify as an upset. But 61-7? It was perhaps some payback for a Dodge County team that had lost eight consecutive games in the series, including scores of 51-14 and 56-7.

2. Commerce 22, Jefferson 7: Jefferson had won five consecutive games in this rivalry, matching its longest streak in the history of the series, by an average score of 33-12. Jamal Browner, who sat out last season with a knee injury, rushed for 161 yards and two touchdowns for Commerce.

3. Riverdale 21, North Clayton 0: Riverdale had lost five consecutive games in the series and been shut out in three of those losses. The Raiders, in their second season under Olten Downs, are looking to improve on last year's 4-6 finish. North Clayton was 7-4 in 2011.

4. White Co. 31, Habersham Central 0: Habersham Central, a playoff team last year in Class AAAA, did not make a great impression in its first game in AAAAAA. The Raiders were clobbered by a White County team that was 3-7 last season but likely will be improved in its second year under coach Bill Ballard, formerly of Tucker.

5. Milton 35, Alpharetta 28: Milton was a playoff team last season despite a 4-6 record in the regular season. Alpharetta won Region 6-AAAAA last year, was ranked No. 9 in Class AAAAAA last week and returns honorable mention all-state QB Joshua Dobbs. Milton rushed for 430 yards.

6. Roswell 42, Centennial 13: Roswell made the playoffs nine times in 11 years from 2000-2010, so its 0-10 mark in 2011 was out of character. The Hornets got off to a much better start this year, breaking a two-game losing streak to the Knights, behind Andrew Kwateng, who rushed for 239 yards and three TDs in less than three quarters.

7. Westover 33, Tift County 29: Westover spoiled the Tift County coaching debut of John Reid, who had transformed East Paulding into a state powerhouse. Westover went 4-6 in Class AAA last season. Tift County meets Houston County, Worth County and Thomas County Central before beginning play in rugged Region 1-AAAAAA.

8. Eastside 32, Newton 0: Class AAAA Eastside ended a three-game losing streak against its AAAAAA county rival and scored its most points in the 11-game series history. Newton's touted defense did its job, holding Eastside to 34 yards rushing, but the Eagles scored three defensive touchdowns.

9. Washington 12, Tri-Cities 7: Tri-Cities, which has four FBS prospects who are linemen and reached the Class AAAA quarterfinals last season, came up short against a Washington team seeking its first playoff appearance since 2008. It was Washington's first victory against Tri-Cities in three all-time meetings.

10. Laney 43, Butler 0: Butler had four consecutive 0-10 seasons before Ashley Harden led the Bulldogs to 7-3 and 8-3 records the past two years. Harden has moved on to Jenkins County, though, and the Myron Newton regime got off to a slow start against a Laney team that was 8-4 in 2011.
