Top 22 candidates for AJC Super 11

Below are the 22 finalists for the annual preseason honor that will be announced on Sunday.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Super 11 team has been selected each preseason since 1985. Georgia High School Football Daily coordinates the selection of the team with help from AJC high school writers, media and coaches around the state.

Trimmed from the list this week are Nigel Bowden (Central of Macon), Harrison Butker (Westminster), Brendan Douglas (Aquinas), Janier Ferguson (no longer at Pepperell), Makail Grace (Wilcox County), Trey Johnson (Central Gwinnett), Alvin Kamara (Norcross), Kamani Thomas (East Paulding), Chaz Thornton (Stephens County), Dominique Threatt (Tri-Cities) and Shaquille Wiggins (Sandy Creek).

Remember that the Super 11 represents the best 11 high school players in the state. That's very subjective, needless to say.

It is not a list of the top 11 college prospects in the state. There have been numerous players in the past (Commerce's Monte Williams, Tucker's Jonathan Davis to name two) who were Super 11 in every sense of the phrase, except every big-name program was not knocking on their doors.

Here are the 22 finalists:

*DL Montravius Adams, Dooly County: First-team all state in 2011 with more than 20 sacks. Consensus No. 2 recruit in Georgia.

*DB Vonn Bell, Ridgeland: First-team all state in 2011 with more than 1,000 total yards, 100 tackles. Consensus No. 4 recruit in Georgia.

*WR Carlos Burse, Alpharetta: 52 catches, 857 yards in 2011. Committed to Vanderbilt.

*RB Travis Custis, Lovejoy: Rushed for 1,839 yards for AAAA runner-up in 2011. Committed to Georgia Tech.

*OL Shamire Devine, Tri-Cities: All-state as a junior with more than 80 pancake blocks. Committed to Georgia Tech.

*QB Josh Dobbs, Alpharetta: Passed for 3,113 yards in 2011. Committed to Arizona State.

*RB Tyshon Dye, Elbert County: Rushed for 1,561 yards in 2011. No. 10 prospect in Georgia (ESPN). Committed to Clemson.

*HB/DB J.J. Green, Camden County: First team all-state in 2011, two-way starter, scored 21 touchdowns. Committed to Georgia.

*LB Keyante Green, Eagle's Landing Christian: More than 3,000 yards rushing, 300 tackles for his career. Committed to Purdue.

*DL Kelsey Griffin, Mill Creek: First-team all-Gwinnett in 2011 with more than 80 tackles. Consensus No. 5 recruit in Georgia.

*RB Tyren Jones, Walton: Led state with 2,375 yards rushing in 2011. Committed to Alabama.

*OL Brandon Kublanow, Walton: First-team all-state in 2011, the only unanimous offensive lineman. Committed to Georgia.

*QB Taylor Lamb, Calhoun: Led state with 3,638 yards passing for Class AA championship team in 2011. Committed to South Alabama.

*DL Carl Lawson, Milton: All-region and all-area in 2011. Consensus No. 3 recruit in Georgia. Committed to Auburn.

*DB Tray Matthews, Newnan: Consensus No. 7 prospect in Georgia, No. 1 cornerback. Committed to Georgia.

*QB Johnathon McCrary, Cedar Grove: Passed for 2,643 yards in 2011, could challenge state record for career yards. No. 7 prospect in Georgia (Rivals). Committed to Vanderbilt.

*DL Robert Nkemdiche, Grayson: All-class Georgia player of the year in 2011. Consensus No. 1 recruit in nation. Committed to Clemson.

*LB Johnny O'Neal, West Laurens: Second-team all state (AP) and honorable mention (AJC) with more than 130 tackles. No. 8 prospect in Georgia (Rivals). Committed to Georgia.

*QB Eddie Printz, Lassiter: Passed for 3,350 yards in 2011 for Class AAAAA semifinal team, could challenge state record for career yards. Committed to UCLA.

*QB Brice Ramsey, Camden County: Passed for 1,308 yards for a run-oriented team in 2012. Consensus No. 1 quarterback recruit in Georgia. Committed to Georgia.

*WR Demarcus Robinson, Peach County: First-team all-state in 2011 with 1,027 yards receiving. Consensus No. 1 receiver prospect in Georgia. Committed to Clemson.

*OL/DL Isaac Rochell, Eagle's Landing Christian: First-team all-state in 2011 as offensive lineman, recruited for defensive line. No. 6 prospect in Georgia (Rivals, Scout). Committed to Notre Dame.

Preseason All-State Teams: Class AA

Taylor Lamb, the Calhoun quarterback who led his team to a state championship while passing for 3,638 yards in 2011, leads the Class AA preseason all-state team.

It also includes running backs Voltair Driver and Jermaine Hutchinson, who rushed for more than 1,450 yards last season, and Juan Foster, who ran for 1,500 in 2010 but suffered an early season-ending injury in 2011.

Several are top prospects this season. Pepperell offensive lineman Andy Dodd has committed to LSU. Westminster kicker Harrison Butker is going to Georgia Tech. We have Butker listed as both place-kicker and punter.

Each preseason all-state team will feature 26 players. Aside from the 22 regular starting positions and two specialists, there are two wild card picks that might appear at any position, often listed as ATH for athlete.

Corrections

Defensive back Quincy Mauger transferred to Kell in 2011 from Cherokee. We listed him among the top transfers for 2012 in Friday's edition. ... Drayon Williams, who transferred from Marietta to Lassiter, is a defensive lineman. He did not start at middle linebacker last season. This was reported incorrectly last week. ... Hector Stanback, the linebacker who transferred from Southwest DeKalb to M.L. King, had one interception last season. He was the fourth-leading tackler. His statistics were in error in Friday's edition.
